: dealer just called
hdh828 01-10-2005, 11:05 AM I almost bought this truck, but the trade in amt was low. They just called me back an offerd another $500 towards the trade in. So I have another shot at it. Can this truck be made to spool up the turbo faster? it seemed slow compared to a 2005 i drove. And should I be concerned about the control module being replaced twice on this truck? Its a used 2004 with lb7 engine 4x4. 16000 miles and certified.$33,995.00:cool:
Thanks

There's lots of warranty left. I think there's a lot of guys that would jump at that truck. That's got to be one of the last LB7's for '04 presumably. Can't comment on the price. As of right now there are way more goodies available for the LB7 than the LLY and it may or may not have EGR.
problemchild 01-10-2005, 11:22 AM A new one is 37k.
Why buy used......
Someone ditched it cuz they were having issues with it.
Rich H. 01-10-2005, 11:39 AM I may have missed what type of truck he was looking at, (LT or LS) and the options he whated. But the 05 I was looking at was $49,000 List. I could have got it for $42,000. If that is his case, maybe checking out a used one is not to bad.
hdh828 01-10-2005, 12:21 PM thanks for the input. I'm buying used cause i cant afford new in 4x4 and I'm not paying depriciation. But my main concern was the computer module control body being replaced twice. also, the turbo spooling issue, seems quicker on a 2005. It happens to be a 2004 LS crew cab 4x4 with everything in it except leather seats and power passenger seat. The dealer added 285 Toyo tires and lifted it a bit.
thanks

OR
They could no longer afford it.
OR
They bought a newer one
OR
They didnt want to mess with the Diesel fuel.

????
The turbo spool issue is likely a funtion of the different turbos. The 05 LLY will have a variable vane Garrett turbo which should foster quicker spool up and be a lot more audible. The 04 LB7 has a IHI conventional wastegated turbocharger with a water cooled center section. Maybe the dealer can be more specific on what lead to 2 modules being required to fix the problem? You will also have more factory HP/TQ on the 05 in gears 2 through 4 (really bugs me), then on the 04. The 05 I believe is rated at 310 Hp and 605 TQ in those gears, in 1st and 5th it is the same as the 04 LB7 300/520.
Loki_nine 01-10-2005, 01:49 PM Those "rated" torque & horsepower readings are sales/marketing nonesense. Just a "big pecker" contest really.
Chevy says... Ford says... Dodge says...
They all want to be on top, & if you listen to them "rate" themselves they ALL are.
Whats the real world difference between a "rated" 300HP, & 310HP? Who stays on top, thats what. You will never feel it!
The numbers game is a joke, the main difference in performances "felt" come from changes in technology (ie-variable turbo, etc...) & they usually come at the price of complexity.
They all have good & bad, buy what you enjoy best. Other than serious racers, who cares about 10HP? depending on who you talk to, you can get that increase with a better air filter (or by changing your brand of oil).
haas-lly 01-10-2005, 02:03 PM i got an 04.5 brend new with a list of 44,000 for 35,900, i wanted used but for a couple grand more i got brand new... another thing to look at is will that 04 lb7 need injectors at 60,000 or are they fixed by 04???

IMO, new style fuel filter & improved education about the importance of frequent filter changes should go a long way towards injector longevity by itself.
hdh828 01-10-2005, 02:17 PM thanks EMSi, can i buy something aftermarket to get a faster response for the turbo. and i hate to beat a dead horse but is that module i mentioned something serious? should i not but this truck? what about hass-lly's comment on injectors? deal hinders on input from these posts cause i may give in more on trade amount.
thanks:ro)
haas-lly 01-10-2005, 02:31 PM did the injectors change from 01 to 04 on lb7s or are they replacing them with the same? my dad just had injectors done on his 01 at 60,000mi...
I don't want to get into a pi$$ing match over which power plant is better. I've never even rode in a truck with an LLY. The LLY has its own set of growing pains and is not immune to injector issues itself, even the almight CR cummins has had incidence of injector failure. As for what will give quicker spool up - I am by no means an authority on hopping up these trucks as you can see from my signiture. An exhaust system upgrade with less restriction may provide quicker spool up. An aftermarket wastegate actuator that will allow for increasing max boost pressure (use with extreme caution and refer to the numerous threads on turbo barking/failure and the maximum recommended boost - last I heard for any degree of garanteed reliability that number was about 26 psi initial lift). If you do this you will likely need some type of aftermarket box to fool the pcm into thinking its only seeing the prescribed amount of boost or it will set an overboost code, that or buy a tuner to keep erasing the codes that are getting set. The injectors on the '04 LB7 are "suppossed" to be the latest revision from bosch. Whether that module replacement points to a biggger issue or not, I don't know. All I can suggest is to talk to the technician involved in diagnosing the problem (if possible) get the symptoms, and maybe post the question in the ask the techs forum. Then somebody like Dmaxallitech or Patrick with more intimate knowledge can speak to the issue with a more informed set of facts to base a recommendation on. Good luck.
haas-lly 01-10-2005, 03:59 PM i was asking on count of knowing what my dads truck just got, not gettin in a pissin match. the gmc dealer is a piece of work... his truck has been back 3 times since the injectors because of what the dealer screwed up and its still leaking fuel all over the manifold. they said it was the first d-max they did that makes us really assured huh! i myself have a chevy lly due to the fact that i couldnt get the same deal on a gmc. he has had his truck fo a couple of years now and i have 12,500mi on my lly and if you ask both of us which motor is better were both gonna say its the one were driving... both are very good.

There ya go - from somebody who has a history with both :D. It sounds to me like your going to have to decide how big of a deal the module replacement is and if your getting good value on a pre-owned unit vs. buying new. Either way you should end up will a really nice ride.
smshiver 01-11-2005, 12:32 AM I had my BCM replaced (probably because of something I did) under warranty and have had no problems. 22k now and happy with my LB7.
akdiesel 01-11-2005, 08:01 AM If that module keeps going out it could be becuase of somthing through out the truck shorting it out.
Personly I would not use a trade in. Keep the vehicle you want to trade in and put it for sale on your own at a local grocery store or in the paper. You will get a much better deal by not giving the dealer the option to use the price of the vehicle you want and the price of the trade in. Not to mention if you also use the in house financing. If you let them use all three of those items to their advantage they will make one look very good to you but alter one of the others or both to their advantage.
If you do go with this truck work in a full and complete inspection of the vehicle. Chances are if it happened twice in a short period of time it will happen again.
Good luck.
hdh828 01-11-2005, 08:57 AM Will it put minds at ease that this vehicle is being sold certified? The dealer called again (2nd time) and they said they will consider another $500 towards my trade in. That makes it $2000 as a down pmt with my trade. I won't be upside down. Lets see if they call me and accept it.
What is that module for ?(see first post)
thanks
Hauln' 01-11-2005, 09:04 AM My 04 LB7 ran twice as good as my 05 LLY. I kick my self every day for tradeing.
sprintmod1 01-11-2005, 01:36 PM There seems to be alot of different opinions regarding the LB7 and LLY. My dealer just about gave me my LB7 because the LLY's were starting to show on their lot. Haulin' has also mentioned wishing to have his LB7 back and I know there are others on this forum that have mentioned it also especially the ones that tow for a living (RickDLance I think comes to mind amongst others). I am very happy with the LB7 for various reasons including no EGR and Cat, etc. I think the biggest thing to look at right now is your last comment "I won't be upside down". Being upside down in a vehicle is NEVER a good thing and I would avoid that at all costs. If it's certified, it should give you more piece of mind that problems will be taken care of with the warranty. Good luck!!
hdh828 01-11-2005, 03:08 PM Thanks Sprintmod1
