: 285s on snow and ice, blah blah blah another tire question
FastCR 01-29-2008, 09:51 AM Hey so I've got a tire question. Right now my dad has some god awful 285/75/16 Cooper AT's on his '01 superduty dually. The tire shop he went to said they are awesome on ice and snow. Well, they blow ass.
I finally dragged his ass to a local offroad shop where they actually know what the hell they are talking about. They reccomended the cooper STs, which I have on my chev, or the Toyo MTs, my dream tires.
He basically wants me to take care of it for him since he's working pretty much all the time, so here's some general info that I have to work with. First off, the truck looks sikk with 285s, and dinky 265s are gonna look gay. 2nd, when the weather gets real bad, he commutes several hundred miles in the truck, and freaks out when the tires slip. Money is not really an issue at this point, safety is. And the last thing is, the Toyos will not clear 285s in the back because of the sidewall lugs and lack of a spacer, so they would have to be 265s. Oh and you can't stud the Toyos.
At this point, I'm leaning towards the Cooper STs in 285/75/16 and get them studded and syped. I think that would be best, but I'm not sure if they are still gonna blow due to the width. He's already pissed about buying those ATs, so its really important that I get it right the first time with this. :(
What do you guys think? If the 285s are still gonna blow, is there a narrower 33 inch size?
Thanks!
gardnerteam 01-29-2008, 10:43 AM For me, driving much of the winter on black ice and packed snow, 285 are way too wide and slip and slide way too much, even if studded. When I had a 4X4 dually, I used 235X16, studding all 6 tires with a heck of a lot of studs, and on real slippery ice I could still slide the ass end all over. Best on ice - the old 30's and 40's steel tractor wheel which came down to a point and cut right through - rides a little rough though.
malibu795 01-29-2008, 10:47 AM cooper ATR or SST
agree with garnder team wide tires on ice is a bad thing:o:
FastCR 01-29-2008, 02:51 PM Okay I'll look for something narrower. ATRs aren't gonna work because our driveway gets hella snow and they have to clean out better than that. And you can't stud STTs.
thebirdman 01-29-2008, 03:48 PM You could go with something like the Maxxis Bighorns (looks similar to the Toyos and stt) in a 235x85-16 (same height as 265's but narrower). You can also get them studded. I know that Les Schwab Tire Centers have them for a good price.
offroadUL 01-29-2008, 04:09 PM FastCR there is a Off Road Tire called Pro Comp which is made by Copper tire. The Mud Terrains have the extra siping your looking for and are pre drilled for studs. They offer many different sizes to choose from. Our Company offers these tires and a unique Dually spacer/adapter for your dads truck. the pro com MT are sipped and can be studded;)
FastCR 01-29-2008, 08:35 PM hrrrmmm. Decisions decisions. sorry ORU but I'm gonna make the purchase through the local shop. I'll check out the pro comps. Problem is now that he's got his hopes up for getting them tomorrow, and they have all the STs in 285 there.
70 gsconvt 01-29-2008, 09:10 PM I'd check out 'editted out non vendor link'. They have most tires and great prices.
tophog 01-29-2008, 10:50 PM Not sure if you have Les Schwab's in MT however I really like their SXT Mud Terrain which looks like a BF KO from the side, pinned for studs and wear great. I liked them as much, if not better then 2 previous sets of BF KO's. They are a very popular tire in the NW.

Another great tire IMO that fits your bill is the Toyo M-55 which is a commercial grade tire that wear like iron and are also pinned for studs. You could get this tire in a 255/85-16 which is narrower then a 285 and about 33.5-34" tall. These tires do have a slight "whine" to them.

trentnell 01-31-2008, 07:54 PM I have ran the cooper st and for the money they are a great tire, a little road noise but i ran them in a LT275/60r20 load e 175.00 a tire, a steal for a load e rated tire in a 20 inch wheel .
FastCR 02-02-2008, 04:19 PM I went with the 285/75/16 Cooper ST siped and studded. They are friggen awesome, absolutely awesome.
