The other day I tried to remove my 1/2 ton's 2 piece driveshaft and it wouldn't slide out of the tail-housing...what would cause this? i don't know much about 2 pieces driveshafts, except for that they slide in the middle and not out of the tranny itself....could it be siezed or do i need to remove the smaller, rear part of the 700r4?? thanks

Well, you remove the rear u-joint, then you pull the two bolts holding the carrier bearing in place, and it should slide off of the tailshaft. If it is stuck just shake and pull on the driveshaft and it will probably come off after some persuasion...

yea or give it a little massaging w/ a hammer.

i had a ford with a 2 piece and it was siezed and had to be hammered out. it only slid back and forth a small amount for normal driving and nothing beyond that

The TH400 has a bolt in yoke for the 2 piece driveshaft . Does the 700 as well ?

the diff yoke is a bolt in, the front is a slip yoke...should come out relatively easily...

like you said, it is siezed. since the front half dose'nt move when in operation it may take a couple raps with a large hammer to start it moving. try using some spline grease when putting it back together.

seems odd that it would seize....its constantly in a soup of atf...

I can't see how it would seize, I bet its a bolt on yoke at the tranny end. Remove the u-joints straps and unbolt the bolt.

Take a snap so were not arguing with each other, ;)

maybe siezed was the wrong word to use. they can get allfull stiff, and need a little help to remove. 700's don't have bolt on yoke.

I've seen rust built up on the splines and some smoked tranny fluid residue that will hold the yoke from sliding out. Tap the U-joint area with a hammer as you rotate the shaft. It should go. Clean it good with a wire wheel and put some waterproof grease on the splines when you re-assemble it.
