I read in another thread on here somewhere that smoke at startup was a symptom of bent rods, and I was wondering if that's true. Mine gives a puff at startup with the stock tune, but I have injectors. Do you guys think I'm alright? And more importantly, how do I find out without tearing the engine down?

Mine smokes at start up and from what I have noticed, all diesels, with exception of the DPF engines out today, smoke to some degree at start up. If the truck is cold, then it's even more pronounced.
To comment though, the lack of smoke released with the DPF engines is amazing. My friend has a 2008 LMM with 5000 miles on it and the inside of the tailpipe is still shinny clean. That's smoke free.

Mine smokes a little at startup and recently had a headgasket and one broken push rod replaced (dealers fault) and still have a small puff of smoke at startup. It's black so I'm not worried.

If you had bent connecting rods you would notice alot more than smoke at start up, it would sound like someone whacking the side of the engine block with a hammer, if the engine even turned over and ran at all. And if your thinking bent push rods, you would hear some serious valve train noise, and not only that the engine would miss and run like crap. bend any internal engine component and you will notice alot more than smoke at start up.
Now the most likely reason for your smoke at start up is probly the injectors you mentioned, they are going to spray more fuel then a stocker, even with a stock tune. And at start up the engine is cold, and even stock you already have incomplete combustion at start up, add more fuel and you have more smoke. what may have gone un noticed is now very obvious. Hope this helped,
Jesse

So is it an issue if you're having some white/greyish smoke at start up until the motor gets warm.

Its been colder than $h.T here lately and I get a greyish/blue to white smoke till it warms up a bit. Even after warm when I stomp on it its more grayish than black when its been this cold out. But my truck dose have a bunch of hours on it compared to the mileage though.

Haha no, but I am a little self conscious about it as I think I'm soon to be at the cutoff point from what I've heard.

It's a diesel or OILBURNER sometimes referred to. They smoke
Sure much cleaner than yesterdays diesels but they still SMOKE!
Ever see a diesel dump truck 18 wheeler go down the road? See any smoke? Think they are running different fuel than you are?
Do you understand how a diesel motor ignites? Do you understand cold fuel burns like duke in a cold motor that's why your truck has 4 things for ease of start?
1) Intake grid heater
2) Fuel heater
3) Glow plugs
4) Block heater
So do a test next cold morning don't plug it in. Don't wait for the wait to start light to go off. Just zip that key to start like you would a gasser and let us know what happens!
How do you guys make it through the day. Bent rods
