: Why such little tires?
djp9747 01-09-2005, 09:05 PM So I've went and looked at some 2500 4x4 and I just can't understand why Chevy puts on 245 ? I mean its a 4x4 after all. Couple that with the already low stance of the trucks, I've seen 2 wd vehicles that sit taller.
When will Chevy/GMC smarten up and start offering at least a 265 tire on at least 7", better 8" wheels? At least on the 4x4?
aketay 01-09-2005, 09:10 PM Smaller tires get better mileage???
check out the 2005 3500's they have 265s

hdd-max 01-09-2005, 09:37 PM But You Will Find That It Is Very Easy To Put On 265's, 285's, Whatever You Want Even 315's Without A Lift Kit.

I think I have to agree with this the most. Smaller tires give better torque, and hence better towing. Driving around in Texas, I see more Chevy/GMC trucks lifted than just about any other brand. From reading these boards, it appears that 285 are the biggest sizes before you have to cutting stuff.
315 ? Are you serious? How much do you have to crank the torision bars to fit those one? Is it really safe? I bet the ride quality goes to hell.
hdd-max 01-09-2005, 10:22 PM I HAVE 315'S ON CHROME H2 WHEELS ONLY HAD TO TRIM FRONT AIR DAM A LITTLE AND GO UP ABOUT 1 1/2 INCHES IN FRONT STILL HAVE PLENTY OF ADJUSTMENT LEFT.......i SPACED SHOCKS BACK DOWN AND RIDE QUAILTY IS BETTER THAN STOCK IMHO....BIGGER TIRES SEEM TO HELP WITH SMALLER BUMPS IN ROAD........TIRES DO NOT RUB UNLESS I AM TURNING THE WHEEL AND HITTING A PRETTY GOOD HOLE EVEN THEN RUB IS VERY MINIMAL.
ON EDIT: YOU ARE RIGHT I THINK 285'S ARE PROBABLY THE BIGGEST YOU CAN RUN WITHOUT CUTTING THE AIRDAM UP FRONT
Lennart 01-10-2005, 04:25 PM Torque Torque has nothing to do with tire size.
Torque is the measure of a force's tendency to produce torsion and rotation about an axis. Torque is measured in Nm. The shorter the lever the higher the force.
->>The force pushing the vehicle forward is reduced when using a taller tire without changing gears.
BUT, a change in tire size could easily be compensated by the ring and pinion or the transmission gearing.
Just had to be a SMARTA$$
Mileage, cost or slippage a potential factor for GM in deciding to use these POS tires?
aka108 01-10-2005, 08:12 PM The 245's were used specifically so you can get your truck into the parking decks in Las Vegas without creasing your roof.
BarryD 01-10-2005, 08:22 PM I don't mind them. I just replaced the OEM tires at 24,000 miles. They were pretty well shot. I got the same size but the new ones are Michelin M/S LTX. Ride really nice. Maybe next set I will go bigger.

In other words -smaller tires provide more torque to provide forward motion. Sounds like I heard that somewhere before :)
Kurt W. 01-10-2005, 08:39 PM Yeah its pretty bad when you pull up next to a Jeep Liberty and it has the same size tires as your diesel. I just finally got some 285's about a month ago after having 245's, and the ride is sooo much better.. So many companies are offering big tires so why they put some biggens on them GM trucks. The new H3 has 33's on one of the higher end packages, and thats a 5 banger. And so does the Titan and the new Powerwagon. Oh well, most of us want different tires anyways.:ro)

LMAO. ):h OK, I gotta ask - are you serious? I took my truck to Vegas a few months ago and noticed that (stock) I was like 2mm away from the roof through all the garages. Coincidence, or could it be that everyone in Detroit takes road trips to Vegas too?
aka108 01-12-2005, 08:40 AM Everyone goes to Las Vegas. Put anything but 245's on a stocker and you'll most likely create a quick crude sunroof for your truck as the overhead on the parking decks is pretty low. Can't think of a better reason to keep the 245's on the truck. Hell, park you vehicle in the Vegas sun and pretty soon that nice leather on the seats will start looking like fried pork rinds. Actually I have no idea why 245's are used as a stock item but the parking deck thing sounded pretty good.
