Will soon be in the market for a boat
Whats the max width that can safely be towed?
Most of the boats I'm looking at are 8 1/2 to 10 1/2 ft wide

8 1/2 unless you want to get some wide load permits, you can squeeze with 9 till you get pulled over for something else (speeding) and the toll lanes get narrow if you dont get ready in advance for them and hit the wider lanes. heres mine towing at 8 1/2, 40' boat 12k, with tripple axle 51' long trailer(drive guards) elec over hydrobrakes, class 5 hitch and drop tube, with a machined 30k ball.

you dont cut that much out of it, and the plate/notch over it is pretty good sized, have had these types of suspension drops on 5 previous truck and not trouble out of the frame rails. If a person was nervous about the frame, they could take some tubing and run it over the top of the frame and extend it past the notch on both sides. Western Hauler also does the notches without any trouble and I know the horsey guys haul some serious weight.
