: Occasional whine in synch with RPM????

This thread could have been here, electrical, interior who knows.....I am hearing a whine about 50% of the time when driving. It literally sounds like a horrible car stereo job where you hear the motor through the speakers in synch with the RPMS, except this is not the case here. The noise is coming from the drivers side dash, or right behind it in the engine bay. The turbo sounds fine and it seems to be coming from the dirvers side not the center of the engine bay. The noise stops at real low RPMS or idling. (Makes me think turbo) Any ideas?

Stupid question, do you have HID's installed in the headlights? Mine cause interference on the radio from time to time

no hids and I am sure it is not the radio. If I have it off I dont get the sound plus it is coming from the dash or under the hood by the dash it seems. I need to get someone behind the wheel when it is happening and tool around under the hood.

Check the serpentine belt pulleys.

mine will do the same thing. how cold is the weather out when it does it? i know when its really cold out, and i drive slow through town, my turbo will whine with the motor. check that and see.

When My belt tensioner went out on me it did this to me and I had it fixed and the problem went away. I lost the bearings and it would whine only at certain RPM's

Interesting it has been happening in the cold, is this a sign of a turbo going out or they just dont like the cold weather? I will check it out with someone on the gas.

i doubt its a sign of it going out, everything is just cold. a little harder to work when things are really cold out.

VMax - did you end up figuring out the problem? My Dad's '03 LB7 just started making what seems to be a very similar noise. Sounds like a roots style supercharger whine, if you're familiar with that sound. It has gotten progressively worse/louder in the last few days and you can now hear the truck coming down the road, well before you hear the rumble of the diesel engine. I pulled the belt off and all pullies seemed to be ok, but I only got a quick check on them. Just wondering what you came up with...thanks!

i had the same noise just before my serp belt pulley locked up and took the belt out,one of the two pulleys by the alternator the cause may be able to use mech sthescope (sp) or piece of wood to see if one noiser than other

have not found the problem. Still makes the whine. It comes and goes and outsied temp and the truck being warm dont affect it. The couple times I wanted to diagnose it it goes away and I cant replicate it.

It kind of reminds me of possibly a power steering pump or being low on ps fluid.

I have a interesting sound that is similar too, but it goes away after my truck is good and warm.

is it a long bed?

carrier bearing will make that noise.

Could you elaborate some, I got something similar happening to my '04 and it too varies with engine RPM's regardless of coolant temp or outside temp.

in what way does it being a long bed have an effect on the carrier bearing?

Be sure to check levels in the allison and transfer case.

the noise comes form the drivers side dash not sure how the allison could make that moise being under and behind the driver.
