: Stainless or Aluminized?
isracing 01-25-2008, 11:19 PM Doing my homework for some exhaust and see there's about a 200 dollar difference between Alum and SS on the MBRP kits. Other than looks, what MAJOR differences are there.... is the SS worth the extra 200 clams? or not really... Like to hear from people who have both, or have had one or the other and changed for some reason
thanks
AlligatorPerformance 01-26-2008, 12:13 AM I think it will be a toss up, for the most part the aluminized systems will last several years under harsh conditions, and the stainless will too. My stainless system has some slight surface rust on it after two years of use and the aluminized system I had after the same amount of time had about the same amount of surface rust. I think it comes down to personal choice, but they all do the same thing in the end.
Just FYI, I can get you a brand name 409 stainless system for about the price of an aluminized MBRP system, and it has a lifetime warranty too. Let us know if we can help.
dmaxstore 01-26-2008, 12:39 AM If you dont remove all filters and the CAT you probably will not see any improvement regardless of the aluminized or stainless.
And you will have to modify or change your computer to make that work.

isracing 01-26-2008, 12:46 AM DMAXStore, seen your truck on Craigslist...
I'm gonna dump the filters, and go Turbo back, and go with the Quad for the tuning.
I'm open to 'brand name' systems for a reasonable price, just as long as it's quality, and keeps the noise down.
Let me know what you have system wise.
THanks
dmaxstore 01-26-2008, 01:13 AM I have not tested the systems with the LMM, but the stock motor's have not changed the Turbo downpipe outlet, so any system should fit.
I really like Magnaflow if you have a Crew cab short bed this sysytem is a great value I have seen them on (craigslist) for killer prices.
hendrixk69 01-26-2008, 12:12 PM the way my 409 is rusting out i should have saved the coin and went aluminized.

409 will show surface rust but will never rust all the way through. Aluminized may look like it is holding up as well or better than SS but eventually it will rust from the inside out and fall apart. How long before that happens depends the conditions its in and how well you take care of it. 304SS is the ultimate it won't show surface rust but it cost a good deal more.
RoadRunnerTR21 01-26-2008, 06:22 PM I went with aluminized because we don't have the harsh winter conditions and chemicals in Texas like they have up north. When I pulled my stock system off there was no rust at all after being on the truck 3 years. I just couldn't justify stainless since nobody can see it anyway. Just my 2 cents worth.

thanx chevy hd. I had ordered the 409 but the 304 came in by mistake i thought i'd try saving a few bucks. what a mistake!
Arkapigdiesel 01-26-2008, 09:28 PM Since you don't have to put up with road salt, go with the aluminized.

I agree, I have 409 on mine & its started to get some surface rust its only about 6 months old
bjadamsr6 01-26-2008, 11:32 PM from the vendor i bought mine from ss was only $20-40 more.
Duration 01-27-2008, 07:36 AM Regardless of which you choose, Stock exhaust is aluminiumized. As far rusting from inside out, I've had alum. steel on my gas truck for 12 years and it appears to be intact.:D So if you were to keep your truck that long or longer would'nt you probably want to change it to a new sounding system by then anyway?;)
DIESAHL 01-27-2008, 12:03 PM i thought about getting aluminized and getting some black hi temp spray paint and paint it.
GMCJOE 01-27-2008, 03:09 PM i thought about getting aluminized and getting some black hi temp spray paint and paint it.
Ive done that before on a few Chevelles I built when they had an aluminzed exhaust. The High heat temp paint did help the exhaust look better and seemed to definately reduce the amount of any surface rust.
I used the silver paint, but the black as you suggested should work the same.
linchhummmer 01-27-2008, 03:16 PM i have the ss and it looked nice for abut a week then it looks just like alumasteel then i wrapped it with thermo tech. but if i were to buy another i would buy the aluminized i dont think theres a diffrence

X2, At least the aluminized can be sanded if surface rust appears.
My 409 SS looks like shit after the 5 inch snow we had 2 weeks ago!
isracing 01-27-2008, 08:41 PM wow, thanks for the great replies guys, I think I've made up my mind and Aluminized is the way to go, especially if I'm trying to save a few bux on the upgrades.
JC PAINT WORKZ 02-09-2008, 12:03 AM I have the t304 stainless from MBRP and its been on since end of nov. and i got under there today to put the downpipe on and its not really rusty just very light pigments... you can take a rag and wipe them off... but they say its gotta lifetime warranty on it... so if it gets worse ill be having them replace it.. bet your azz for like 950 turbo back...
