: Steering rattling on LBZ??

Hey there fellow chevy and gmc owners. I have had my '07 d-max crew cab short bed 4x4 since late july. It has been a great truck so far and would buy it again in a second. I am starting to hear something kinda rattling in the steering column. It does it usually on rougher paved roads. It is really annoying, as you can just about hear it over the radio. Is this something anybody here has had a problem with? If so, i'll take it to the stealership because i'm covered under a HEAVY warranty. Thanks in advance. Steve-O

Sounds like the intermediate shaft.

And here is how you can fix it...http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3325

But since it's under warranty i'd take back to the dealer.

Go get a new one installed at the dealer and then go about this fix.

Mine has been "fixed" several times also, but it keeps returning. Just last week had it done at 93K miles at no cost because the service manager wrote the times that I had been there before having it done and redone. They put the new shaft in this time so time will tell.

My rattle ended up being a bunch of wired that were bundled together bouncing and swinging and hitting the plastic covers.

My Truck Has Done The Rattle Since Day One,(aug./08) But Also Had The Clunk Noise. It Is Two Different Type Of Noises. Took It To The Dealership Just Like Three Weeks Ago Cause I Hadn't Had Time And Because I Could Not Stand It Anymore On Offroads.

The Both Noises Went Away For About A Day, 150 Miles (50mi. Offroad) Then The Rattling Noise Started Again Worst Than Ever! The Bad Clunking Noise Stopped But The Rattle Continued, Haven't Had Time To Go Back To The Dealer.

Mine is starting to do this now. I can't really hear a rattle, but I can feel it when going over bumps in the steering wheel. Sounds like this is very common, does anyone have any luck telling the dealer exactly what component to replace and they just do it? Or do they want proof?

Buy your next one on ebay and take out the old one and put a zerk in it so you will have a replacement the next time. Takes about 20 minutes to change them out with a 15MM Wrench. Once you tap and drill the old one and put a zerk in it you can just give it a shot of grease and clunk is gone again...

I just went to the dealer yesterday and said that I was hearing a clunking noise from under the dash. They said bring it in on Monday, takes about 1 1/2 hrs. to fix and would be covered by warranty. No problem, didn't ask to see the truck or anything. I originally was going to try to fix it myself, but then thought that it had been getting progressively worse and that I would have them put a new shaft in first, then fiddle with it myself. There are some good threads I found by searching about using hose clamps to secure it so it doesn't clunk.

Wow this sounds like something gm should be getting wise to by now. They sure take shortcuts sometimes, on obvious stuff too. Kinda makes me question my loyalty to the brand sometimes. This is the same company who builds corvettes that run almost 200 mph stock? The same company who used to build sweet '69 camaros? wow, their quality has really gone downhill....so sorry to hear.

There is a TSB on the steering noise. It's to replace the steering shaft.
Also a TSB on the clunking noise if it's felt in the floor by the firewall, it's to replace the body isolator.

Not sure if my problem falls under this topic, under the issue of body isolators, or something completely different.

Just recently, (last 3weeks-month) I've noticed a slight knocking in the steering, its nothing you can hear, just sort of feel it whenever I hit a bump. It also could come from my drivers door being mis-adjusted and not closing right, but its hard to tell. When my truck goes back to the dealer for door fixing, tranny cooler line replacing, and a couple other things should I have them just look at the steering shaft? or steering/suspension components as well? Its under bumper-bumper warranty for another 2000 miles. For warranty work I need to be specific about the problem, so any suggestions on what to check (tie rods, ball joints, etc.) or what to tell them?
