Hi guys. My brother has a 2001 Dodge Cummuns with an auto transmission. He wants to know if high idle is available for his truck. I did a search and came up with the TSB# 18-037-04. Will this work for him? If not, what options does he have? Thanks in advance.

There is an automatic high idle that the dealer can program in. It is sometimes hard to find a dealer that knows how to do it apparantly. Apparantly it has 2 levels. The first level it increases the idle RPM and when it gets colder the second level cuts off fuel to 3 cylinders. Apparantly it sounds like the bottom is going to come out of the motor on level 2.

I believe the TSB you have there is for some of the 04.5 Dodges. I inquired to my dearler about this and they said they would try on my truck as not all of the truck have a computer capable of this feature (based on production date) I know there are aftermarket deals, but for that model/year from the factory I am not sure....
My 04 high idles automatically. If it's real cold it goes right into it. If it's like 40ish it speed up after a miunte or so.

Where can I send him to look for aftermarket options? I activated high idle on my D-Max and he really wants it for his Cummins.
Your help is greatly appreciated :)

All of the new RAM's have automatic high idle if it is very cold or very hot. It helps with keeping the engine warm or cool. When needed, it kicks the RPM up to 1000, but you have to be in park on the auto or neutral with a standard and with your foot off the brake and off the accelerator. Seems like it takes a couple of minutes to kick in, but it should.
An updated ECM flash is available for those people with the automatic tranny. It allows you to use the cruise control to set the RPM speed at either 1100 or 1500.
Nothing factory is available for the standards other than just the 1000rpm high idle. There is, however, an aftermarket product available from BD Power. I don't know anything about it though. Here's the link:

I hope this answers your questions! :)

The 2001 can have the cold weather tsb done. It will increase the idle to 1200 rpm.
And under certain conditions drop 3 cylinders i.e. when its colder than a witches tit. I highly recommend getting this done if you live in a cold climate. It is awesome.
There are aftermarket high idles. Couple hundred bucks. I found a stick that was free. Figured out how to use the center console that folds done to create different levels of pressure. Could set my rpm anywhere I wanted it. Took a couple tries but it was cheap.

Thanks guys. He said he found the TSB number and is going to take it back to the dealership for high idle activation. I appreciate your help.

Make sure to warn him that it sounds like the bottom end is falling off when it kicks down to three cylinders. Otherwise you might get a frantic call.
