: Blower fan out! freezing outside
Sweiny 01-24-2008, 08:37 PM Here is my deal... my heater/ac fan is not working at all.. i have been running it on #5 speed for months now (cause thats the only one that would work)..
i was figuring it was the resistor, but since my lazy a$$ didnt fix it right way, i am here! i am just seeing if anyone had a DIY for the resistor and the blower motor, if that turns out to be it??
g man 01-24-2008, 08:51 PM I don't know about a DIY, but GM sells a new pigtail for that problem. Not sure of cost either. I believe this is a common problem for our trucks. Sorry, not much help, huh?
Chromer 01-24-2008, 08:52 PM Resistor is really easy to replace; 'bout a half hour job, tops. They have redesigned it as the original one is some POS printed circuit deal and the new ones are like the old style resistors, a heavy wound wire encased in ceramic or something. You prolly just finally burned out high speed on the cheapo PC board
They are about 50 bucks

You dont have a year in your sig, so I'll assume its a 2003-2007 truck.
2 screws for the black silencer cover (don't remove the one above the tranny hump. you'll regret it) IIRC, they are 7mm (9/32")
2 screws on the fan module. Should be the same size as above.
Take you 20 minutes, tops.
modified 01-24-2008, 10:33 PM Here's some info with part numbers for the resistor and a new connector. It is not uncommon to find the electrical connector melted, with a poor connection. See post #4.

Sweiny 01-25-2008, 12:42 PM Thanks for all the info guys!! very much appreciated!
cuffnup 01-25-2008, 02:28 PM x2..its very easy to replace...
kkanuck 01-25-2008, 07:23 PM I too just removed this cover and motor today, but both my motor, and resistor are okay, my problem is there is an air leak somewhere, and the higher I turn on the blower fan, the louder the annoying WHISTLE!
Anyone know of a fix to get rid of this sound? I know it is not the motor or bearings, it is an air leak I believe in the ABS housing duct(s) the blower motor screws to I think....
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers,
Sweiny 01-27-2008, 09:01 PM how are the plastic parts attached to get at the resistor... is it a pressure fit?

If your talking about how to replace the resistor, you replace the complete black plastic assembly, which contains the resistor network and the relay.
DaleM 01-28-2008, 01:19 PM Glad I looked here. Mine just went out for the second time in as many months on my 2004.5. Last time a friend with an auto shop repaired it - $95.00. If it's this easy I'll do it my self to save some $$$. Any way to prevent it from happening again? I try to turn the blower off when I leave the truck but sometimes just forget when it's really cold out.
Sweiny 01-28-2008, 10:50 PM Just replaced it today... its about time it warmed up a lil bit... i am glad i did it myself, it was so simple and it only cost me 28 dollars and 1/2 hour of my time and most of the time was getting my tools in place and trying to bend twenty different ways!
beast_olds 01-31-2008, 09:08 PM Here's the bad news... the newly redesigned unit does the same thing already seen three that the pigtail and resistor were replaced on come back with repeat failures. T.A.C. says for now apply liberal ammounts of dielectric grease to the pigtail before installation into the resistor.

Thats surprising... I installed redesigned resistor in my '00, with no pigtail, about 2 years ago, and it still works fine
Sweiny 02-01-2008, 10:52 AM no problems so far.... the new one does look like a better product

TheBac 02-03-2008, 10:13 AM Anyone have a pic of a 2001-02 setup? I've never looked at one to see if they are set up the same.

They are exactly the same as photo above your post
