: Back up lights to cargo light switch
Grouperassasin 01-23-2008, 06:06 PM I saw on here that someone wired up their back up lights to their Cargo light switch. This to me was a grat idea I'd never thought of before. Don't ask, I have to think a lot for work!
If one were to do this, where would be the best place to pick up power for these? Would you run to the fuse box in the engine compartment, or would you have to come through the firewall and tie in at the switch. Would you have to run a relay or just tie into the factory switch. I don't want to melt it! Any help or possibly a crude schematic or verbal process would be much appreciated. I'm pretty good with building wiring, but fairly new to the 12V stuff. Thanks so much in advance!
Grouperassasin 01-24-2008, 05:41 PM BTT,
Come on, someone has to knoww where I can pick up this circuit? Anyone? Just trying to find out if I can wire it in and where's the best place to tap into it. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!
myojunk 01-24-2008, 07:10 PM is there not a cargo light switch/button on the dash that you can simply push when you want to back up?
or are you really that lazy???
sorry, i couldnt resist...:p:
lancerdually 02-25-2008, 09:23 PM I'm looking for the same thing. I want some lights I am adding to my headache rack to come on when I put it in reverse and also when I push the cargo light button. Could you let me know if you come up with answers?
I'm going back to sleep now cause I am just too lazy to look..................NOT
Grouperassasin 02-26-2008, 05:40 PM Nope, not lazy at all. But I hook a lot of trailers up in the dark, and the cargo light won't shine on the hitch with an 8" drop hitch, so therefore, some lights down low would be great. I'd rather not wire them to the backup circuit, which I agree would be lots easier, but if I'm behind the truck between it and a 12K lb trailer, I'd rather the truck not be in reverse. I've printed out several wiring diagrams, located the metripack pins (I think) and found the normally closed relay that's needed, now I just need to find some free time to try to wire the damn thing up, I'll let you guys know when I get it done.

I have done this following instructions I found on this website. Basically I added extra backup lights to the reverse circuit, and then wired the cargo light switch such that it triggers the reverse lights. This way the extra lights are on if I'm in reverse, OR if the cargo light switch is on.
My recollection is that I accomplished this at the BCM (under the dash) with a standard automotive relay. I would take pictures or something but I'm nowhere near the truck for the next couple of weeks. Do a few searches. The information is here.

this is how I did mine and you are right, it is hooked to the BCM with a relay but I cant remember what wires to tap into.
lancerdually 02-27-2008, 09:17 AM Guess I'll do it my way and not tell anyone exactly how I done it, that seems to be the general consensus on here lately it appears. I have read so many threads on this and none of them agree with one another.

Sounds like a plan. Good luck with that. Glad I could help. I'll just keep my mouth shut next time.

Sorry if that sounded like a "flame" on you, personally. :confuzeld Just seems like there are a bunch of threads on how to do it and none of them seem to agree on much. Was hoping someone would come in and say this post shows how it is done the way described in good detail so I wouldn't have to "poke around" on the dmax too much. Again sorry if you took that as a "flame" on yourself, was never meant that way. And thanks for your information.

No problem, just feeling a little sensitive I guess. :) I do recall there was a bunch of incomplete info here, some of which may have been a bit contradictory. It ended up being very easy, but I did a bunch of research before I started. I'd honestly be happy to go have a look at what I did and write it up, but I'm in the UK right now.
gearhead 02-28-2008, 07:38 AM read post 13, this is my post of how I did it with a picture. http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=93761&page=2
this is on a 03 so I dont know if it will be the same on yours.

Thanks Gear............... will be try'n this weekend. Where should I send the beer if it works? :beerchug:
Or bring the pistol if it doesn't :anitoof:
akdiesel 02-28-2008, 08:51 AM I went the harder route. I spliced into the power for the rear cargo light that is in the A-piller of the truck and insulated the brackets due to the seperate ground system these have.
I am sure there is an easier way of doing this but I am not that electical savy.
Also I looked at that old thread and I am sorry for those that asked for some pictures. I lost track of the thread.

Wonderful thing is, just like my post here......we can all say what we wish. I apologized for what some took as griping......or complaining as you call it. And if my earlier words had offended anyone, again I am sorry for that. I to have much praise for the guys who are always willing to help others out on this site, just as I have gladly done numerous times.
BUT, YOU, since you want to come in and "flame" after what I have already apologized for, YOU, sir can kma!;)
