what do you want to use onstar for? If you want the diags, accident notification etc. you'll need onstar. If it is just for the wider range cell phone coverage, there is an alternative. Mine didn't come with Onstar, but the better cell coverage was really what i wanted. Onstar uses a 3 watt amplifier with external antenna for cell service, that is what gives them the extra range. (Contrary to some popular belief, they do NOT use satelite phone service, onstar only works when you can get cell phone service). For about $250-300 you can get a 3 Watt cell phone amplifier to connect to your cell phone, along with a permanent mount rear windshield mount external antenna. This will extend your cell phone range greatly, although just like Onstar there are areas were it won't work. Basically you'll get about the same coverage as shown on the digital onstar coverage map. West coast has dead zones. Places that I had 1 bar on my cell phone now often have 5 bars when I connect to the car amp. (Regular cell phones transmit with 0.3W vs. 3W from an external amplifier)Dead spots are pretty rare now.
