I was wondering if anyone has come across overheating issues in a gasser. I have overheated my truck 3 times while plowing this last storm and wonder if any one has suggestions. Its a 2004 6.0 and it overheats when transporting my plow from one job to the next. Any help would be appreciated...Also heard of a possible fan clutch TSB but can't find it on ALLDATA.

Engine Overheat on Vehicles Equipped with RPO VYU Snowplow Prep Package - kw temperature high hot light ipc dtc gauge air cool coolant fan clutch #PIP3282 - (Jan 5, 2005)
Engine Overheat On Vehicles Equipped With RPO VYU Snowplow Prep Package.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom described in the PI.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1580528&psdid=437&evc=sm#ss2-1580528">Condition/Concern:
Some customers may comment on high engine temperature readings when driving at highway speed with their snow plow installed on the vehicle. Temperature readings will be normal when the plow is removed.
<A href="http://service.gm.com/servlets/BlobShtml?ShtmlFile=1580528&psdid=437&evc=sm#ss3-1580528">Recommendation/Instructions:
When the vehicle is driven with the plow in the up position it will interrupt air flow into the engine compartment. When the air flow is interrupted the fan clutch may not sense the warm air coming off of the radiator. This may induce improper fan clutch operation.
1. If the customer concern of overheating has been verified, SI diagnostics for overheating have been completed, and the overheat only occurs when driving with the snow plow installed, continue with the information found below.
2. Verify there were no modifications made to the vehicles cooling system when the snow plow was installed. Cooling system modifications may induce overheating concerns.
3. If the vehicle does have the VYU snow plow prep package replace the current fan clutch with GMSPO part number:
A. 22149877 ( with GT4-3:73 axle ) B. 15710101 ( with GT5-4:10 axle )
NOTE: At this time K3 trucks are not included in the fan clutch update. If a dealer has a customer concern of the snow plow causing an overheat on a 02-05 K3 vehicle with the VYU package please make a field product report and document the readings below:
Type and size of snow plow: Temperature reading off of the Tech 2 during the concern: Temperature reading off dash gauge during the concern: Is there any DIC messages for engine coolant hot or overheated:
When any new information becomes available for the K3 VYU equipped vehicles this Pi will be updated.
.
Please follow this diagnosis process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed. If these steps do not resolve the condition, please contact GM TAC for further diagnostic assistance.

My truck is having the EXACT same symptoms. Took it in to have a few other minor issues addressed. While there I noted the complaint of my overheating while transporting plow, and printed out the TSB. They responded with: " Your truck already has the updated clutch fan"
There are several guys on the Snowplowing forums that have had this TSB completed, and it TOTALLY ENDED all overheating issues. It was like NIGHT and DAY. While I don't like to doubt my dealer, I think either I DON'T have the correct clutch, or I DO have the correct one, but it's calibrated wrong.
Any suggestions from you tech guys? Have you heard anything from the "inside" on this?
And lastly....where is the Part Number on the Clutch housing? Is there a way I can verify that I DO or DO NOT have the correct Part Number?
Thanks
P.S. Truck is at dealer waiting to be picked up....I would like to know as much about this as soon as possible.

Lawnboy, with your vin# we could check the warranty history. If the fan clutch has been replaced there should be a claim for it.

I bought the truck new, and nothing has been replaced to my knowledge.
Here it is if you want to check it for me anyway....

You are right, there have been no repairs. I would say you don't have the updated fan clutch. Since this bulletin applies to 05 trucks also I don't think they started putting them on 04 trucks at the factory. I don't know if the part number is actually on the part.
If they won't put on the new part I would install your plow and have them verify it overheats. Take them for a drive if you have to.

Thanks guys!
Had them install a new clutch last night....picked it up this morning, and just got back from 9hrs of plowing....GUESS WHAT......
DIDN'T OVERHEAT ONCE!
It's definately the fix. Why doesn't GM install this clutch fan from the factory???
Gets me upset.
But VERY happy with the new one!

The clutch is only replaced for those that carry the plow at highway speeds. I dont know how much different it is then the stocker...
I cant tell difference by looking at them.

It's only a subtle difference for normal driving. If anything, it may take longer to warmup now.
But the difference while transporting the plow is immense.
I'll be calling the "doubting" service manager today to express my thanks for "listening" to me when I told him that I'm not picking the truck up until he replaced the clutch assembly. He said,..."Well, we'll do it for you I guess, but it won't help you any".

Unless this and other threads in other forums started a rush of action by owners, I doubt it. They had mine in stock......even though they said I already HAD the correct one on it from the factory.
Tell them to call another dealer.....that you NEED this.
