Hey guys, forgive me if this has been answered, I read about a year ago that some Alli techs figured it would be possible to have a 6th gear in our pickups. So has anybody done it or is it possible?
Many Thanks!!!

My cousin is an drivetrain engineer for GM and metioned this summer that GM is working on putting a sixth gear in the ally and that there is room. If I remember right it could be out in '06.

Double OD is what I'm hopin for, I have an Allison World 3000 in my motorhome with a double OD, seems like it wouldn't be to big of a deal to do it in the pickup. Any idea if our trannies would be reasonably easy to retrofit?

6th Gear is already there, its just not being used. I dont think the current valve setup in the trans will activate it. I am not sure if retrofit is possible either. I think 06 is the MY where it will be introduced though

I thought it wasn't a 6th gear but rather a lower than 1st gear used in the heavier trucks?

Eric, do you know what ratio it will be?

Allison needs to get off their booty, there's many people who'd love that 6th gear.
If not Allison, then someone else like ATS or Suncoast or Transgo or somebody aughta make a replacement valve body or whatever it takes...

Pace, I wouldnt expect to see it aftermarket any time soon.. WAYYYYYY to much involved. TCM would need to be changed, valving, etc
I am unsure of what ratio it would be, but it would be numericaly lower then the 0.71:1 that OD is now.

I recall someone stating over at the "Page" some time ago that it would be a 0.61:1 ratio. That should drop RPMs about 14 percent over the current 5th gear on the highway.

Man I might be able to get 16mpg with that settup!

6th gear would make a lot of sense especially for the guys running down the freeway at 75mph with the stock tires on. I wonder if it would be a easy upgrade once GM releases the 6th gear in 06 or whenever it comes out?

interestingly in the factory GM service manual for the 2004 Silverado there is an RPO code for a 6 speed allison listed for the 8.1 and Duramax.
The 5 speed allison is RPO M74 (Allison LCT1000 5speed)
the 6 speed allison is RPO MW7 (Allison LCT1000 6 speed)
It shows for each 8.1 liter and Duramax configuration. Hints of things to come??
