Can 295/75-16s (or even 315/75-16s) be fitted with Green Keys and perhaps an add-a-leaf in the rear of an '02 2500HD? Will the truck sit level with greenies but with out the add-a-leafs? I assume a bit of trimming will be in order as well?

Well since guys are running the H2 wheels/tires 315/70R17's then I would only assume 295's would fit since they are smaller. I would guess you would be doing some trimming, etc. to make them not rub "most" of the time as they will still rub at full lock backing up, etc.

As far as 315/75R16's ...well this is larger then the 70 series 315's in height by about 1/2" and perhaps width as well. I haven't heard personally of anyone running 315/75R16's nor would want to as this tire is usually a good fit on 6" lifted trucks.

Stock trucks sit lower in the front by about 1.5-2" ...so if you add a leaf in the rear I'd guess you'd still be nose-down if that is what you want. If your trying to achieve the look of a real lift kit by cranking T-bars, installing green keys, add-a-leaf and cramming big tires in the wheel wheels I wouldn't go that way ...but that's just me. If it were easy with no side-affects/issues everyone would be doing it.

I know lots of people do the T-bar crank and green keys only to level the truck and put larger tires on them.

BTW, the only tire I am aware of in a 295/75-16 are BF KO's and perhaps the BF Mud Terrains.

H2 tires are 315/70/17's, PC...

I'm running H2s with green keys. No issues with suspension. I moved bumper forward 1/4" and trimmed 1/2" from the lower airdam, then tied back the parking brake cable and the wheel liner just behind the washer fluid tank on drivers side. No scraping or rubbing.

Nitto also makes a 295/75/16 Terra Grappler in A/T as well as M/T, they are cheaper and last longer than the BFG's!

Really? I thought I read where people were disappointed with the Terra grapplers regarding the mileage they got out of them and after 1/2 worn got loud? Perhaps I'm thinking of a different tire ... have had great luck with BF's ... over 45K on last 2 sets.

Did you do anything with the rear suspension at all or does it sit level and clear your 315/70-17s with just the green keys?

How do you compensate the computer for the larger tires? I was told the trans would act funny if you do not reprogrram the computer anything over 285's, have you had any trouble out of yours?

BTW...your truck looks great!!!!

Jboysen,

I have not touched rear suspension. Thought about a 1" block or adda leaf, maybe in future.... It sits with a veryyyyyyy slight forward rake. Because I was able to move the bumper out 1/4" and up 1/4", I was able to adjust the bolts back down so the pass. key is back on its stop, and the drivers key is up 2-3 turns (to compensate driver and fuel weight). Made my CV angles a lot less severe...and my anxiety a whole lot less.

burbanman,

I have a BullyDog Powerpup that I used to change speedo input for 315's. Most any of the programmers will allow you to do that. As for computer/trans problems....I have not experienced any. The Allison learns and adapts... Everything runs as it normally would, just less RPM per given MPH now.

Thank you for the compliment! :ro)

First - the green keys. I am familar with these in terms of the mention of them. Although Off Road Unlimited in Burbank California sells a "2in. leveling kit" (http://www.offroadunlimited.com/store/index.php?cPath=22_84_62&osCsid=139c7aad69d1038fae0c78dfba425cc5). Is this similar to the keys you have? Also, where did you pick up your green keys? Last question for you - I promise. You say you moved out your bumper 1/4" - Who, what, or how did you do this. I work at a local 4x4 shop although one of our competitors offers something of the liking (Desert Rat) or if this is something custom you did? Let me know! Thanks!

295's on 16x8 with 4.5" backspacing. Green keys and a 1.5" block in the rear. Also see my pics link in my sig for more shots of the truck.

Yeah, that's cool. Could you maybe snap a pic of the truck directly from the side? Hard to tell how much the tire fills the wheel wells from that angle. Do you notice an problems towing (assuming you have stock 3.73 gearing) with that size tire?

If anybody else has a side shot of 285/75-16s or 295/75-16s to compare with that would be awesome.

- MarkGMDude,

That ORU kit is expensive! I think someone else had started a thread about that kit a little while ago. Yes, the green keys are the same thing. I bought mine from DmaxalliTech (Eric). His website is www.gmdieseltech.com (http://www.gmdieseltech.com/) and he is a certified vendor/sponsor (and GREAT tech!!!) of the forum, too. Here is the page:

http://www.gmdieseltech.com/store2/cart.php?target=product&action=view&product_id=16231&category_id=281

You'll notice he also has started a "loaner" program with the proper tool, so you can DIY!

Secondly, you can purchase Bilsteins from John Kennedy at www.kennedydiesel.com (http://www.kennedydiesel.com/). for $260. He is also a certified vendor/sponsor on the forum.
There has been some heated debate about longer shocks or shimming stock length ones after a torsion lift, search for the older threads on the subject, particularily this one: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=9665&highlight=green+keys, and also you'll want to check out this thread that we've been arguing at, since there is some very good info from some of our techs there:

http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=19228

As for the bumper, it was incredibly easy.

1) First, remove the core support cover. IIRC, there were 4 of those pin-clips on the front, 3 on top. I used 2 flat head screwdrivers and CAREFULLY pryed the center pins up (try not to let them fall out, no biggie if they do, just put them back in to reuse..) and then pry the whole clip out.
2) Next I removed the grill. There's 1 10mm bolt in the top center, and 4 phillips-head twist-locs on the 4 corners of the center grill, plus 2 spring clips on the ends. You can remove the grill without removing the headlights, too. Just be careful! That grill is fragile!
3) I found that the bumper on my '02 is only held on by 6 bolts, 4 horizontal under the grill, and 2 vertical in front of the tires. I removed these and off it came. It's very light, also.
4) The change is simply a shift of the lower bumper mounts from under the frame mounts to on top (take the clip nuts off the bumper mounts and put them over the frame mount holes), with 1/4" aluminum flat stock to make spacers. If you find the bumper doesn't look level, you can use fender washers to shim the lower side (thats what I did..had to add 1 on drivers side for some reason).
5) I then used a dremel to "oval" out the inner side of the 4 horizontal mount holes in the bumper 1/4" so I could pull the bumper out.
6) I then used the 1/4" aluminum to make 2 spacers for the vertical mounts.
7) I then took a brand new, sharp! razor knife and started cutting the grey air dam back. I got some advice from another member to use masking tape to mark off a line to ensure a straight cut. Then, carefully, (there's that word again...I can't stress it enough!!) start trimming a little at a time. Some guys here trimmed their airdam at an angle, but I trimmed straight down. I kept trimming in small amounts until I hit 1/2". I thought it looked more "normal".
I found I still had 1/4" spacing from the bumper to the fenders, and I still have a enough room to install the coldfront, too. One nice thing I found is that there is a lot of adjustment in the 6 mounts, so if you take your time, you can make it look like nothing was ever done. I should have done a DIY with pics, but didn't think about it at the time.

------------------------------------------------

If you have an '03, heres the thread explaining how to move the bumper on those trucks: http://dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php?t=6859&highlight=moving+front+bumper

Hope this helps.

jboysen,

I haven't towed anything since I put on the H2's, so I cannot say how they effect towing capacity. I think there's a thread going on somewhere about that subject, but for the life of me, I can't remember where it is. If I come across it, I'll PM you.

I don't have any side pics. In fact, tonight I put the 265's back on for the rest of winter. Wouldn't you know it....... Look thru the "What does your ride look like"

Well for what is is worth, I am running Toyo 285's with just green keys. They are turned up about 5 turns and after an alignment it drives really smooth and handles very well...
