I suppose you probably could leave the bellhousing on, but I'd pull the whole thing as a unit. Also, you would probably run into problems with the clutch linkage if you tried to pull the tranny without pulling the bellhousing. I'd pull the whole thing, it's not really any harder anyway (although I know the top two bolts are a pain).
You're lucky... Pulling a manual isn't fun but it's more fun than pulling an auto... ;)

I have removed the NV 4500's the same way that you are attempting to do. Just remove the shifter, unplug electrical connections, and your 4 bolts and drop it out. Word of caution as with any Transmission, the 4500 is very heavy.

Just remember as a rule of thumb "the longest way is always the easiest way".

take the ujoint loose don't try and slip it out of the slip yoke. i just did a nv4500 in a dodge one ton 4x4 last fall and i had to keep them seperate going in if i remember right. maybe different on the chev version.

i just spent 45 minutes in the shower scrubbing grease off my arms and head...the entire back of my head was covered in heavy grease.
anyways, i tooled on the thing for 6 hours today. i got everything disconnected and ready to come apart. i'm going to have to separate the transfer case from the tranny to get them out, but that makes it a little easier i think.
as for that slip yoke on the front driveshaft, i jacked up the transmission to give me enough room to wiggle it out...i'll free it up some other time...i'll probably have to get the thing red before it becomes a "slip yoke" again.
this is my first ever tranny removal job...another couple hours and i'll have everything on the floor.
i'll update a little more tomorrow.
thanks.

Good luck and we're all counting on you... To use my favorite quote from the movie "Airplane"...
