: Gloplug Light ?
phishintrip007 01-22-2008, 10:25 AM I was reading my manual this weekend and notice there is a Gloplug light that comes on when you first turn the key and then goes off when you are ready to crank. However, on my truck the Check Engine Light comes on when I turn the ignition and then when it goes off, I crank. But, my truck has the Gloplug light, it just doesn't use it.
Is this wrong? or did something change with the LBZ and the heater/gloplug light isn't used anymore?
I bought it used (25k) and this was how the dealer told me it worked (using the check engine light) so I have never questioned it until now, however, the manual says it is a separate light which the truck does have on the console.
WHISTLER.06 01-22-2008, 10:37 AM well being in fl. you would'nt see it as often i guess. mine jus flashs in warmer weather and now jus stays on a couple secs and yes theres is a wait to start light diff than the engine light it is curly line like best i can describe. goodluck
saratoga 01-22-2008, 10:47 AM The glow plug light is the curly looing job next to the CEL. I'm in Tampa and only see mine for 2-3 seconds at the most when I first start it in the morning. If it's over 70 or if the truck has been running anytime in the past six hours, the glow plug light won't come on. I always turn the key to run first to make sure however... good habit to have!
PADiesel 01-22-2008, 11:24 AM Definitely a temperature sensitive item. With the temps in FL it may just be a flick if anything at all. Up in PA it comes on most of the time. It was 9 degrees this morning and I had it plugged in for 3-4 hrs and the light never came on. If I hadn't had it plugged in it would have been on a while.
NCMIC 01-22-2008, 11:33 AM the glow plug light should not be on more than 3 seconds even in 20* weather. you'r check engine light shouldn't be the only on on. you may want them to doublecheck your glow plugs with the control module to double check.
phishintrip007 01-22-2008, 11:52 AM thanks, yeah the question wasn't about whether/when it should come on or not but which light should come on. It has been cold here lately (low 30's, cold for here) but the only thing that comes on is the check engine light for about 5-10 seconds and then goes off. I wait for it to go off and then crank. The curly wire light has NEVER came on ever, only the check engine light. Something is wrong there, I am going to call and take it in.
The salesman told me the check engine light was the one that told you when the gloplug was heated and never mentioned anything about the curly wire light, I have only had the truck for 3 months and it is my first diesel so I didn't know the difference until I noticed the curly wire light one day as I was turning the key and looked it up in the manual.
BobbsBags 01-22-2008, 12:20 PM The salesman doesn't know what he's talking about.
If the glowplug lamp is burned out, then you're certainly letting them heat up enough waiting the 5-10 seconds for the check engine light to extinguish. If the glowplug module is malfunctioning (and not illuminating the lamp), then the glowplugs might not be heating up at all, but since you're in FL, you might not notice any difference when starting. Like everyone else said, the lamp should come on when the truck is cold, and the temps are cold (even in the 50s & 60s)

dodson914 01-22-2008, 12:40 PM When I first got my truck in September I never saw the glow plug light come on. Finally when the temp dropped here quite a bit I started to see it. Makes your remote start pretty useless.

you should have a delay setting on your remote start to allow for the glowplugs to cycle before it starts
2006sierra 01-22-2008, 01:21 PM I have gotten so used to the glowplug light I even look for it in my wifes Grand Prix gasser!!! I also end up letting it idle to cool down the turbo it does NOT have!! Yikes...
phishintrip007 01-22-2008, 01:33 PM LOL, I did both of those when I drove my grandad's gasser this weekend. I kept catching myself sitting there with ignition on waiting before cranking it.
saratoga 01-22-2008, 01:43 PM I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your truck, please don't take it that way. :)
The 06 trucks had some glow plug controller problems which were resolved. Have your dealer check to make sure it has the updated program for the GPCM or was made after the recall date.

phishintrip007 01-22-2008, 02:12 PM I got the build sheet from this site and saw that the gloplug recall upgrade had been done for my truck. So, I am thinking that isnt it. Probably just a bulb that is out or something.
phishintrip007 01-23-2008, 04:33 PM just got back from the dealer and he checked everything and said it was working properly. He said it just hasn't been cold enough for the gloplug light to come on, which it does flicker on sometimes but only for a split second. I am going to wait for the next cold snap and see. according to him and his computer thing it is working fine. It has consistently been down in the 40-50's several different days so it seems like it should do more than flicker when turning the key but who knows.

This is the exact same thing mine did. It will definitely come on when it gets in the 50's. Probably only come on for a second or two though.
