My outside air temp gage on the rear view mirror always reads 4* warmer than it really is. I know that some of you have the same problem. I relocated the sensor to just behind the front bumper, and it still reads 4* warm. The other day I drove to work and there was ice all over the road. The gage said 33*. When I drove home later that day, the ice had melted and the roads were fine. It wasn't even raining. The roads were just about dry. The gage read 37* and was flashing "ICE" :wtf:
So, is my sensor bad and just needs replaced? Or are these things never right, and I just have to settle for a ballpark reading? Thanks.

What are you comparing yours against to know that its wrong? I know when I first start my truck up in the morning it can sometimes read 45 degrees when I know its really around 30, but I think thats from it somehow warming up in the sun, (the front of my truck faces the sun). After I start driving it usually drops to around what I think is reasonable, but I have nothing to compare it to, except for the bank thermometers, but theres two of those within 1/2 mile of each other and they are both diff by 3 or 4 degrees, so its hard to tell whats right.
I know mine will say "ICE" well above 32 degrees. I think GM decided to be safe than sorry with their ice warnings because there might still be ice on the road that hasnt melted yet.

Mine flashes "ice" on start up if temp is around 37 or lower. Think they do that as a warning to be aware that there "May Be" ice on the roads.
Mine seems to be rite on, It reads the same as my indoor/outdoor thermo. in the house.

Mine reads ICE also when it is 37 or lower. That is because if a puddle of water it very thin on a road surface and the road surface is cold from like the night before it will keep the puddle frozen over and will be icey. As far as how accurate mine is either the same as the banks or maybe slightly off but I don't care I only use it for fun to see how cold it is outside before I jump out in it.

Mine has been reading 10 or more degrees above actual temp. Two days ago outside temp was -2, mirror said 29. Has anyone had these replaced? I have had this option in last 4 trucks and never was more than a few degrees off.

My outside thermometer at my house, as well as the several thermometers around town, banks, mechanics, ect. My gage is always 4* warmer, no matter what the temp is. I get up a 4 o'clock in the morning so it's always dark when I start my truck. Even at start up it's 4* warm. It's not that big of a deal, I can just subtract 4* from what it says. It's just when I pay that much for a truck I expect everything to work right. At least it's not as bad as roscoe778 gage. That would be about useless.

when you have your winter front on it can be a factor too of it not getting air in the front grille

If you feel that the gauge is off, place a call to the dealer and ask them to replace it. Or, just try and relocate the sensor first, to a different place that is more open and in line with an open line with the outside. The front grill cover does inflate the temp a little, due to the heat build up inside the grill area. That is the reason for the relocation of the sending unit.

I don't run a winter cover, and I have relocated the sensor to behind the front bumper. Thanks for all the replies guys. I will probably just replace the sensor. I'm sure they don't cost THAT much.

mine is right on but when you set and idle they arent cause your not moving ie getting air to the sensor so its pulling warm air from the engine
