Checked my engine oil today at 600 miles on the ODO. To my suprise, it was blacker than my '02 Dmax w/90K on it. I've been careful to do the suggested break in so far. Made 2 short, slow tows yesterday after the 500 mile mark. Anyone else see this during break in? The maint. schedule posted here says to wait till 5000 miles but others change all fluids after 500. I think I'll be changing oil tommorrow unless someone can convince me otherwise. I'll be towing a 15K+ TH and prefer the safe than sorry mentality! All the fluids may come out tommorrow!:)

hey if bothers you (and it would me) change oil & filter ,it shure cant hurt a thing but worrie can shorten the life & enjoyment of driver. besides 1st change @500 is the norm for many...

600 miles and black?? Mine turns black two minutes after I start it!! I don't worry about it. I know it's been changed, black or not. Don't be a racist. :D :D

Black is normal, dirty is not. As long as you have a filter on there, you're ok:)

I agree with everyone else. Black after 500 miles is the norm. I've got 31K on my truck. I changed my oil 3 weeks ago and I have close to 500 miles on the new oil change and the oil is now black. It's normal for a diesel. I changed my wife's Jeep oil at the same time. She has over 500 miles on it and the oil is a light tan. That's normal for a gasser.

The main difference between your 2002 and your 2008 is emissions. It makes the oil look dirtier quicker. You can change it if it makes you feel better but you will see black by the time you hit your next 500 miles.

Thanks for your input. She's my first NEW diesel and plan to keep her for a long time. I've always been a little anal when it comes to service. I guess I'll let it go a little longer. Just want to do the break in right. :D

Changed my engine oil at 700 miles for the first time. On my LBZ the oil is always black. I think it has something to do with some sort of injection event to meet emmisions standards that makes the newer trucks have black oil so fast.

don't wait :grd: get all that nasty assembly lube, and small metal shavings from a new motor out of there.

Pre' 05 does not have EGR which explains why those older Duramaxes go distance before oil turns black. My 05' went black first 1000 miles since new then instantly turns black next couple of oil changes so I blocked the EGR and fingersticked. Uses Ea oil filter from AMSOIL, now it takes longer to turn oil into black again. So far 1,500 miles but not completely black yet. However, it takes one or two oil changes to notice the difference because I had ran truck over first 20,000 miles with functional EGR. Wish had blocked EGR much sooner but oh well......
