: Filter Change for Allison Transmission
rondevu056 01-21-2008, 04:38 PM What is the correct time/mileage to change the spin off filter for the Allison Transmission on a 2007 LMM? The book states 25,000 miles. The dealer says 7,000 mileages. The Allison website says 5,000 miles. What have the rest of you guys done on this? Not sure what brand is used in the transmission. Some place I have seen it referred as trans-synd, which I think is Castrol/BP product. I thought I have heard that you are not supposed to mix the brands. Just looking for some advise here. My first diesel and first allison. Thanks
WanaDmxsub 01-21-2008, 05:43 PM No need to change the internal filter unless the tranny is being rebuilt.
I change my spin-on every 5k. I fill the new filter with Mobil 1 synth ATF. Not sure what fluid Mike L put in it when he did the SCIII.
huthuthut 01-21-2008, 05:44 PM This needs to be in the Allison section and itll get moved, but I just changed mine on my LMM at about 1500 miles. Id change it by 2500 miles. Then every 10k or so - cheap insurance.
Dont buy teh filter at the dealer or it will be like $40. Find an allison dealer and they will be like $7. Transynd is great fluid (purchasable at the Allison dealer), or Mobil 1 ATF is also a good synthetic. Fill up the filter when you change it... not much more will leak out.
shuffman 01-21-2008, 08:04 PM I change-out my spin-on every oil change = 8000 klms = 5000 miles. I just had a major flush done this past Friday @ 112,000 klms = 70,000 miles and they did a change-out of the internal filter after they removed the pan for cleaning and inspection. The internal filter should be changed and the pan dropped periodically to ensure that this filter has not trapped metal filings which are a tell tale sign of an internal problem, especially when towing a hefty load. IMHO, every 60 to 70K miles is a good time to consider doing this flush. Cheap insurance is better then an expensive rebuild that could have been prevented..............SWH...

Mike seems to like the QuatraSyn from Citgo. Not sure if that's what he always uses. He's talked about it at least a few times.

Hammer 4 01-21-2008, 09:53 PM Change my spin on every 4-7k..cheap insurance..:D
cuffnup 01-21-2008, 10:28 PM change the spin on every 10,000 or so but i wouldnt bother with the internal filter till around 50,000
Bozeman 01-21-2008, 11:33 PM When you change that filter do you lose all your fluid? Or Can you spin it off and replace with a new one (full of fluid) and be ok?

Yes, you can change the spin-on and the loss of fluid is minimal. It is not attached to the pan, it's located on a housing at the corner of the pan. I always fill my spin-on with fresh clean fluid before installing. DO NOT THROWOUT THE MAGNET, with the old filter!!! Trust me it happens. I buy my filters by the case since it's cheaper that way, about $8.00 a piece. Good luck....................SWH...:)
Hammer 4 01-21-2008, 11:46 PM You barley lose a pint of fluid, which is no big deal..:D

Thats the way I understand it also but I don't change the spin on that often.

According to Allison, the internal filter only needs changing at overhaul.

Some here believe a change sooner can't hurt.
With 94K miles on my truck, I've changed the internal filter twice. The first at 39K when I installed a deep pan, and the second at 81K when I installed a FilterLok.
If I'm removing the pan, I'll spend the $20-25 on a internal filter.
I'm not a Trans Guy, that's just my opinion.
jpringle3 01-23-2008, 11:46 PM I didn't change mine til 9632K would have done it earlier but was moving. It did seam to shift a little smoother. I will do the pan filter after I get my shop built as there is quite a bit of dirt and wear material sluffed off in the first little while. Dut then I plan on keeping this thing for a long time! I used Baldwin, AC Delco is also good that is not the thing you want to use cheap shit. PLAY SAFE!
WanaDmxsub 01-24-2008, 01:00 AM OK...I should have said Overhaul not rebuilt...
Anyway, I agree with modified, if the pans coming off anyway, then a new filter is going in.

So what's the change interval for the internal filter , ( since GM won't tell us)
Oregonnovaguy 01-25-2008, 11:55 PM So what's the change interval for the internal filter , ( since GM won't tell us)
Per Allison, only at overhaul.
JMGAZ 01-26-2008, 12:11 AM I change-out my spin-on every oil change = 8000 klms = 5000 miles.
For $50 I can get 1 gallon of Transynd and 3 Allison spin on filters. Ill change the filter everytime I do the engine oil, which is about every 4 months (hell, its an '05 with only 28K)
$50 for a years worth of filter changes is piece of mind to me.

braddunagan 02-06-2008, 09:10 AM Does anyone have part numbers for the Allyson deep pan, Internal deep suction filter and locking ring? Maybe new gasket also if this needs to be done when changing the pan? I just went and purchased my Transynd and spin on filter. I am going to install my Transgo-jr and everything at same time. I asked the guy where I bought my Transynd and he said there was no need to change the internal filter. Also I keep reading about a the deep pan for $45. I need the part numbers to order this stuff. I don't want to trust someone who says it's not needed to get the correct one!
JC1843 02-06-2008, 09:40 AM Here is the part numbers on the stuff I just installed! Pan 29536522 $56.70, Gasket 29536326 $34, deep filter-inside- 29537966 $21.97, filter -spin-on- 29539579 $8.87. Some Alli dealers give better prices- and depends on who waits on you - They charged me $47 a gallon for Transyd when I went back for another gallon it was $33-- same guy! You can re-use the old gasket if you want! Good time to add a TransGo Jr.:D

07LBZADDICT 02-23-2008, 09:55 PM I´m Getting Ready To Change My Allison Spin-on For The First Time, I See Some Guys Mentioned The Loss Of Oil Is Minor Maybe A Pint, Should I Refill? And Isee Others Fill The New Filter With Clean Fluid(is This A Must). Question: Is It Ok Just To Change The Filter Without Adding Any Oil? Or Will I Have To Buy Just A Quart To Refill.
I Still Dont Know Where I Am Going To Get My Filter, Dont Know Any Allison Dealer In The Area. Dealership Sell Any?
PLEASE LET ME KNOW I GOT 500 MILES TO GO, THANKS.

48 miles each from Brownsville. And REALLY FAR from Calgary.
Personally, I would fill the new spin on. I usually fill new oil filters as well before install. Can't hurt. Is it manditory?...don't know for sure.
Hope this helps.

Just change the filter, no need to add fluid.
winter200 02-24-2008, 03:34 PM Just spin the old one off, swap the magnet out and put the new one on. Depending where your at now with the level on you fluid will determine weather or not you should add. Just swap it out and check the level. If it needs some, pour it in through the top like normal. Personally I wouldn't pour any into the filter. The fluid that goes down the tube gets filtered prior to going through the rest of the system. If you fill the filter the fluid doesn't necessarly get filtered.
RayMich 02-24-2008, 04:25 PM Allison says to change the spin-on filter at the first 5,000 miles, then at every trans oil change after that (25,000 to 50,000 miles depending on severity of use).
I changed mine at 4,300 miles and then at every engine oil change after that (7,500 TO 8,800 miles)
Us trans guys don't believe that shit for one minute. ):h
Mike,
When do you recommend changing the Allison internal filter?
Thanks. :)

THANKS I´LL CHECK THEESE TWO PLACES OUT! I KINDA FEEL BAD NOT KNOWING OF THEESE DEALERS BEING 48 MILES AWAY AND YOU BEING ALL ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND IN ANOTHER COUNTRY FINDING THEM. POWER OF THE INTERNET.
Whenever I change my Ally filter, I have a extra magnet mounted on the new filter filled with new fluid, get under my truck when truck is cold, take off the old filter, wipe off a drop or two, and put on the new filter. Takes me about 3 minutes. Nothing hot to get burned from...
