: Sirrius antenna crapped out on me
Unit453 01-21-2008, 03:21 PM Driving to work and started losing service...Went in and out and finally stopped recieving all together...Now I'm pissed. Regular radio sucks ass and I refuse to listen to it. I'd much rather listen to the engine anyways than local commercials. The radio display was showing "antenna" so I assume it failed.
My question is:
How the hell does the antenna fail? I assume I could just buy a new one and plug in into the existing port?
chamblee21 01-21-2008, 04:02 PM funny....mine went out yesterday too...I need my sirius working!!! THis is my third antenna, $39 at best buy......what the hell....did a google on it and come to find out that this is a very common problem. People saying they have to replace these things all the time. Let me know if you find anything else other than just buying a replacement and thats it.....
cuffnup 01-21-2008, 05:00 PM if you have to keep replacing them that could be a pain in the a#@
speedster100 01-21-2008, 11:26 PM I've used the in house antenna with good results in the vehicles. Just stick it down in the back window of the car or in the truck I set it on the dash...
Wasn't shelling out the 70 bucks they want up here in Canada for another car antenna.
You can buy a whole new receiver including antenna for 40 bucks so man what a rip off scam on sirius antenna's me thinks...
Unit453 01-21-2008, 11:42 PM I dont quite understand how the antenna actually fails...It just sits there...Hell, it isnt like its a moving part.
custom8726 01-21-2008, 11:49 PM A lot of People run there antena wires under the weather stripping for the door The wire gets beat up from opening and closing the door on it all the time. If you have a factory XM antenna there is a plug converter for your sirius to tie it into your XM antenna. It does not get as good of reception as the factory sirius antenna though!!!
Unit453 01-21-2008, 11:55 PM Its run through the roof through the pillars up to the roof markers. I knew there was a pin to piggyback onto the stock XM antenna. I had Best Buy install it. I guess I need to go back and get another one now or look for the pin that I need.
heymccall 01-21-2008, 11:59 PM Buy a couple

Seriously, I can't begin to see what would cause a failure other than loose or dirty connections. I know, very Punny:D.
chamblee21 01-22-2008, 01:43 PM Man, don't chunk it yet. Mine has been out for a couple of days like I said.....Weather warmed up a little today, turned it on just out of habit as soon as I got in the truck and what do you know it is working now!!! Glad I checked I was going to go out tonight and get a new one.
steakman 01-22-2008, 08:48 PM I feel your pain Nick. I am on my second antenna, 3rd radio...finally got the sportster 5 with changeable colours. Only got it cause my 4 had a lousy method of staying put in the car dock and the power pin that is on the dock broke off from in n out of the car. Call sirius and see if they sell only the dock..?? Answer: NO, ya gotta buy the whole car kit.!! NIce I say..! So go to Future shop and they want $53.00CAD for a damned plastic pce of Crap with the antenna and car charger too...I say "can I buy the dock.?" - "Nope you can't.!" Almost ended up buying the Stratus 3 (orange screen), full kit for 43.00 but then decided I really wanted the higher end one so I payed the Piper and got it.
Go to find on E-bay that a dock can in fact be bought and got it for $23.00usd. So now I got a spare system that works and as such have now decided I'll likely give it to my nephew Trent who has not really had his share of good breaks in his short 19yrs of life.! I know he'll like it and it'll make me feel good giving it to him.!
BTW: I too run mine down the rubber door seals down to the back of the roof. Good for about 12 months.
Adding a direct connect to the radio/stereo is not a bad thing as well and prevents significant random static.
cheers

There's an awful lot of good Karma on here. Keep it up. I'm learning everyday. Maybe it'll help Trent, too.
duramax3388 01-24-2008, 09:49 AM i have broken over 6 sirius antenna's even one of the big truck antenna's right now i am on just a cheap xm on from walmart for 20 bucks it does work just as well if not better than any sirius antenna that i have had so far. Most of the antenna's that i have broke where from pulling the cable out of the antenna and most of the time it was from the wind just pulling it dont know why just what looked like to me
dan-o 01-24-2008, 11:46 AM Your truck has the onstar/XM antennae right? If you have the SIR-GM1 sirius box, drop the glove box, pop off the yellow connector on the brown XM wire and attach the wire to your sir-gm1. I used a small zip-tie to secure it better but I have zero problems with reception. It will take you 2 minutes.

2 minutes....Sounds good...
Isnt there an adapter that I need for this?

No...once you take off the yellow clip it fits.;)

The adaptor often mentioned (sold on ebay I think) connects the yellow XM connector to another harness that plugs into the sir-gm1. It's not needed.
