: Cold Start
BECKER 01-21-2008, 07:32 AM Last night it was -10 below and i couldnt start my truck in the morning. It didnt seem like it was turning over fast enough to fire. Do you think my batteries are getting weak? It has 90,000 on the batteries. A couple years ago it started at -30 below.
caniption 01-21-2008, 07:41 AM Too thick a grade of oil, or a weak starter could cause it to crank slow as well. Did you have the truck plugged in or on any heaters or anything?
brimy311 01-21-2008, 07:45 AM I have had my truck plugged in for almost 3 hours now, no luck getting it started. Not sure if newer batteries would crank it or not.
BECKER 01-21-2008, 07:54 AM I have never used my block heater. I pluged it in afterwards and it didnt seem to work. It must not be working? I should definatly notice if it is working right?
brimy311 01-21-2008, 08:15 AM I had my Block heater plugged in over night yesterday, the glow plugs were on for only a couple of seconds and it started as if it was 1/2 warm. I hooked up a timer last night (hoping to conserve energy) and the timer clicked on at 5am. I am going to try to start it in about 15 minutes.
brimy311 01-21-2008, 08:32 AM Well, Mine finally started. 3 and half hours of being plugged in. It barely started, I think I am going to swap the battries out today and see.
Goldfly727 01-21-2008, 09:31 AM what are you using for oil? trying to turn over 15w-40 takes takes quite a bit of work...i live up near the canadian border and right now it is -20* outside. i use rotella 0w-40 synthetic, i just switched over and i noticed that my truck has a lot easier time turning over because the beginning weight is not as thick. i know i had that same problem you are with my truck back when i had 15w-40 in and it was 25* above, my truck has the remote start and when i pushed the button to start the truck my truck would sometimes crank so or not crank at all(the remote start has a starter kill on it if the system senses the engine wont turn) and as soon as i plugged in my truck it helped...then i switched to the sythetic and with it being plugged in my truck has never hesitated since even with it -20*
brimy311 01-21-2008, 09:42 AM I just swapped to 5w-40 Synthetic about 4 days ago.
Goldfly727 01-21-2008, 09:50 AM hey brimy311...could you fill in your signature please, so we can see what you are driving...thanks

i would say if you still have the original batteries that it is probably time to replace them...if you decide to do so, just make sure you replace both at the same time.
brimy311 01-21-2008, 09:51 AM fixed.
BECKER 01-21-2008, 10:14 AM did the new batteries do the trick?
brimy311 01-21-2008, 10:58 AM I have not picked them up yet. Once it is started it runs and starts fine. It is just the overnight that is killing it.
5Cent 01-21-2008, 12:39 PM Mine did the same the other week. I left it outside, it snowed, was close to 0*, cranked, but did not fire. I figured for sure she was frozen.
I moved it into the garage and plugged it in. 5 hrs later and still no start. Then I kicked myself and checked the prime, sure enough, soft primer button. I gave the filter one extra nudge to make sure she was tight and proceeded to prime away....1 min later she was purring.
Anyone know why it would lose prime during cold, this could be his problem too? It was neither frozen or filter loose, and the bleed screw was not leaking any.

Keep in mind that it probably would leak out since its all in vacume.
brimy311 01-21-2008, 06:50 PM So my truck would not start after sitting at work for 6 hours. I went to Autozone and purchased a 800 cca Optima red top (I already had another from my old truck that is in great shape) Install both of those and HOLY CRAP this thing cranks fast and starts quick now. I would definatly recommend changing out your batteries if you continue to have problems.
