wilburch 01-20-2008, 08:25 PM Hi all,
I am looking for a local well versed person or shop in the Vancouver Washington or Portland Oregon area who knows the 6.5 td electronics issues.
thanks for your response,

All I can say about the GMC/Peterbilt dealer on Swan Island was that their mechanics said to "sell it" when asked about the 6.5 in my truck one time. They don't like em, thats for sure. I'd be interested to know if there are more "friendlier" folks around town.
Turbine Doc 02-05-2008, 07:38 AM How about posting your problem & fix ity yourself, it's very likely we've seen it before here, I love the inept mechanics that don't have a clue about the 6.5 it makes prices of the 6.5 very affordable by them continuing to pass along the myth they are bad

Yea I love those guys! I'm a mechanic and work on some 6.5's now and then. There's a couple I'd really like to have, maybe I should just tell them to sell it next time they come in, could get myself a real good deal. LOL:D
Seriously though like TD said just post the problem and chances are we can tell ya what's wrong. At least that way you will have a idea if you still take it to the shop. If ya get mechanic that doesn't know the 6.5 you'll probably end up telling him what to do!!
SnowDrift 02-05-2008, 12:31 PM If you cannot diagnose and fix it yourself via this board/members, Heath Diesel is right around the corner from in Washington.

Well, if you define 'right around the corner' as being a 4 hour drive 1-way, then I guess so...
Rob :)
Tracktor 02-05-2008, 02:21 PM I am in SW Washington and haven't found anyone qualified. I have done all my repairs/upgrades myself. What type of problem are you having?............

Not to mention the enjoyment of the drivetime parking lot that I-5 is up that way.

Some guys just aren't mechanically inclined, just like some woman can't cook, ;)
Too bad your not closer, :(

I have been posting my issues thus far and am extreamly happy with the breadth of the information that this site has provided. In fact I enjoy a good problem to solve I just have some physical limitations not to mention time restrictions. I do still "get er done", but having a down day following bending over the engine is not fun or practical.
Its rather ironic though that my brother does have a shop in Portland and I do have access and have been using his Snap on MT2500 for code reading and the Vantage for componet testing, and he is the one who did the install for me, but he is also one of those who will say "sell it" because its not something that he is comfortable working on and seems to want to learn the 6.5.
I am working on the "CHECK LIST" and have other posts that are trying to diagnoise things. Thought I had it with the fuel cap replacement but alas I must continue to dig deeper.
Thanks ALL for the replies. This is an AWESOME site!

First, good looking burban in the garage. Where abouts in SW WA are you? I did find a shop on Minnehaha here in Vancouver that I tried for diagnostic work mainly just to get the emissions waiver. Just Right Auto is a WA state approved Diesel Tech facility and the mechanic is a 6.5 owner too. The down side is and this is what I have been trying to prove or disprove is they were recomending to send out the pump. I am not sold on the diagnosis but that may change.
I guess that the jury is out until I can confirm the diagnosis. I am just wanting to get rid of the issuse so that I can build it up a bit!
wild willy 02-06-2008, 03:16 AM wilburch,
not sure what you mean by stumble on acceleration, but my truck used to have a miss (as Bill Heath calls it a "fish bite") and I waited a long time before I changed the Electronic Filter Harness. It did fix the problem for me and it was reasonably priced, about $60. You could get one from Heath and at least put that part out of the way for probably less than an hour of shop time diagnosis. Easy to install your self. I know what you mean about the physical problems working on your rig. Been there. Still doing it though.
knkreb 02-06-2008, 06:41 AM Minimize your time investment to checking/removing the filter harness, and plumb in a fuel pressure tee and go for a drive... that's of course after it passes the lift pump test. I'd like to see the whole diagnostic checklist, but I identify with the time restraint... I too fight that in my time investment on the site alone.
jifaire 02-06-2008, 09:09 AM Pardon me if I'm missing something...
I went back through the 2 threads on this issue, and I can't seem to find some needed information:
a) did you ever gt around to removing the IP Filter harness? Just find it, remove it, and plug the ends of the wire loom into each other. Go test drive.
-- I doubt it's your problem, as described, but it could be a factor, as several people pointed out.
b) Did you ever get around to doing a lift pump test? Hook that gauge up to the brass 'T' handle (water drain), run the gauge out to your windshield wiper, tie it on there and go for a drive. You should have positive fuel pressure at all throttle positionsl.
-- FWIW, you should never register vacuum on that circuit... it's supposed to be fluid-filled. If pressure drops to zero, that means your IP is effetively out of fuel. IMHO, this )bad Lift Pump) is the most likely culprit, given your symptoms.
c) you talk about black smoke... have you tried putting a 'helper' spring on your wastegate? (temporary, or course). If your wastegate is not capable of closing at low rpm, you will have difficulty generating much in the way of turbo pressure until you get some heat energy built up, giving you poor spool-up times.
IMPORTANT - keep working on that checklist. There are lots of interconnected systems on these things, and unless we have a checklist to work from, we end up asking all the same dumb questions, or re-reaing multiple threads, like I just had to do.
BTW - If you're in SW Washington, you really ought to think about phoning Heath Diesel and taking a nice drive over to Ellensburg. Bill and Todd will figure your problem out in pretty short order... the 6.5 is what they do, and like most other mechanics, they really don't 'wish it was a DMax'.

Thanks, I also have a '98 K3500 witha 6.5. I must be a glutton for punishment.
I live up by Amboy, work in Vancouver. I'll try and read your old threads when I have a chance.......
