Coming up on my three year warranty and keep getting things in the mail with a chance to buy a extended one.Doesn't the truck come with a 100,000 mile on the engine and drive train.I have got 27,000 miles on it and have had no problems. So is is worth the money or just throwing it away?

i have an extended on the dury, cobalt, tblazer, and tahoe. once their expire in1-3 years. It can and cant be useful. it depends on what goes wrong. If its a GMPP, they normally carry a $100 deductible. Which if you lock up the rear end will be veru usefull. In all reality, you will have to get some things fixed that are over 100 bucks. Some can be major or some can me 250 bucks. So is it good to have??? yes and no, just think about how long you will keep the truck

If you decide to get an extended warranty, the only one I would consider would be the GMPP extended warranty from GM.

If you search the internet, you can find dealers that will sell it to you at a discount.

As was already mentioned, it depends on what your intentions are for your truck. How long are you going to keep it, what kind of miles do you put on, how do you use it, etc...

I myself burned through 36K miles in just over my first year, but purchased an extended warranty up to 75K miles. Basically I just added miles not time. My GMPP is now 3 years/75,000 miles.

This is how it works out for me: I bought my truck July 1st '06, put on ~36K a year, and am now sitting ~53K miles. I would go look now to see exactly but my truck is at the dealer over the weekend getting- New drivers side hub/wheel bearing, new trans. cooler lines, new pass. power folding w/L.E.D. blinker mirror, new pass. front door speaker, new HVAC head unit due to a light out, new drivers door window regulator AND a new radiator due to a split seam along the top.

Was the extended warranty worth it to me? Without a doubt! Probably ONE of those mentioned repairs would cost over my deductible of $200. They did send an adjuster out to verify and approve the repairs as my list was so long but he approved them all on his own. The way I figured is, no matter how many times you take your vehicle in for warranty work under GMPP you pay the deductible each time. OR you can have them do it all at once and pay the deductible one time, thats what I did.

Good luck on whatever you decide!

Cheers!:beerchug:

I'll second what Raymich said. The only extended "warranties" worth a hoot are the GMPP/GM Majorguard. I had a Majorguard plan on my '97 Chevy and the couple of time it had to go in, it went in, problem was fixed and I got it back, no hassle. The aftermarket ones are useless. If you don't have EVERY reciept for every oil change, fuel filter change, etc, they can, and usually will, deny your claim.

It can be a crap shoot for the individual. Overall these pay a high commission to the salesperson and make the insurance companies a lot of money. Odds are that the house will win. That's why the pressure is on to sell the extended warranties.

On a 2006 truck, only the diesel engine is covered to 100,000 miles. The rest of the powertrain is covered only by the 36-mo/36,000-mi warranty, unless you have an extended warranty. I'm not sure about the turbo or injectors.

It can be a crap shoot for the individual. Overall these pay a high commission to the salesperson and make the insurance companies a lot of money. Odds are that the house will win. That's why the pressure is on to sell the extended warranties. The extended warranty is in fact an insurance policy to protect you in case something breaks after your regular warranty expires. You could say that money is wasted if there are no failures. But if something major breaks, you'll be glad you bought it. No different than getting comprehensive and collision insurance for your truck. You basically wasted your money if you have no claims during the year. But if that 8-point buck jumps out in front of you and causes $4,000 worth of damage to your truck, or if someone decides that he wants your truck more than you do, you are glad you got the insurance.

Another plus feature for the GMPP warranty is that if you get rid of the truck before the extended warranty expires, they will send you a prorated refund of the unused portion. Sure, the refund may not be huge but at least you get something back.

After many years of purchasing the GMPP Major Guard warranty on several GM cars and trucks, I have never had a bad experience with them.

I bought an extended warranty through AAA. It was cheaper than GM, has no deductible, and covers everything. I'm almost at the end of my mileage and they covered about $5000 worth of repairs for the $2000 I gave them (in 12 payments). They were a little bit of a hassle the last time but they covered the bill and I could take the truck to any licensed repair facility.

I just bought an extended gm warranty from gm on my 05 3500 6 litre cost around $2100that gets me anoth 60k or 3 year and it covers anything in the drivetrain. Just before my original warraty came up my truck was in for a new hub and that bill would of been over a g note, so for $2100 i think its a good investment.

What does the GMPP stand for? I purchased my truck used as a certified vehicle and it came with the extended bumper to bumper to 39K, and the drivetrain (engine, trans, front and rear end, etc.) to 100K with no deductible. Is this the GMPP, or is there another warranty?

GMPP = GM Protection Plan

GM came out with a new program for their used vehicles during the 2007 model year. - If you purchase a "GM Certified" used vehicle from a GM dealer, you can get the 5yr/100,000mi warranty on the complete powertrain. Keep in mind that it has to be "GM Certified" in order to get the new longer used vehicle warranty.

The GM Certified program involves a comprehesive inspection and certification by the dealer that the vehicle meets all the criteria to become GM Certified. The selling dealer then pays GM a fee and then GM will provide the longer warranty.

I bought the warrenty on a used 04-5 D/A with 53000k for 36k & 3 yrs. The dealer fixed a broken fog light frame, Power mirrors, a plugged up air conditioning drain and it took 2 times for a tranny leak (they had to drop the tranny and get to the torque converter. It was worth it for me because I did not know the trucks history other than internet searchess.

I would definately get the GMPP. I just got it for my 2005 dmax and paid just under $2,000 for 3yr-36,000miles over my factory warranty with $0 deductible. I was a dealership tech for six years and saw a lot of expensive repairs covered by GMPP with no problems.

These are just my thoughts. I have purchased 2 GMPP warranties on two non-Dmax vehicles (Wife's suburbans) each about $1,600 each. In total, I spent $100 on the deductible and got another $100 worth of repairs.

In short I should have self insured with the $1,600 for future issues and would have pocketed $3,000 bills (although I still have one vehicle that is now out of warranty).

I do not carry it on my D-max, jsut can not justify. It all comes down how many miles you put on and your personal tolerence for risk. Mine is a low mileage daily driver and I have a high tolerance for the risk.

Of course this will be the truck that has high $ repairs at 36,001 miles .

Best of luck.

Steve

Think of it this way. How much can "you" repair for $1600.00 not much. I have gotton the exten. warranty on all new vehicles. I wait until the main warranty is just about up & then purchase the mfgrs exten. warranty normally from the dealer where I purchased the vehicle.
Good Luck

I plan on buying a -0- deduct. GMPP warranty for my '05 2500HD Diesel but not at my dealership unless he can match the quote I received from an out of state dealer, which is hundreds less than book. There are different prices for new, under 24000m and under 36000m.
I am not home at the moment but will post prices and dealer name on my return.
My truck is under 24000 but the Tahoe had just passed 24000 when I found this GMPP discount dealer so will wait till closer to 36000m to buy.
The -0- ded. is 'slightly' more than the $100 ded. but will be recovered after 2 repairs in the 3 or 4 year span of the warranty.

I purchased the 48 month/ 48,000 KM (30,000 mile) gmpp top of the line warranty, based on what I estimate my yearly miles will be. It's a 2004 model, but it's kind of like having a brand new truck! So having all the bells n whistles, it feels very good having that kind of protection.

Why don't the Diesel place members search for a dealer to get a good price for GMPP warranties as a group. I mean if a dealership is willing to deal it could be good for all. I saved $1k on another vehicle warranty I bought doing this same thing.

as long as it is somthing reasonable, it will likely be covered. Like someone said. aftermarket comapanies are typically not worth much. You will occasionaly find a decent one. The hard thing from the dealers end is getting it approved. With majorguard or GMPP we can work quickly with them just over the phone in under 3 minutes normally.

When our 2001 STS neared the end of its standard warranty period (time wise), we had only 11,000 mi. on the car with no problems. We purchased the GM Major Guard policy which gave us an additional 4 yrs. and I think, another 15,000 miles. Beginning about a month afterwards we had to have the car towed 6 times for the same no start problem. The stealership kept throwing parts at it, each time assuring us it was fixed. After the 6th. time being stranded in a parking lot late at night, waiting for a tow truck and going through the same crap with the Cadillac dealer, I drove it around the corner and traded it on a new Honda Accord. GM did refund about 75% of my money for the extended warr. I almost begged Cadillac to make me a deal on a new one as that was the 6th Caddy I had purchased and I believed owner loyalty meant something to them. I even wrote the chairman of Cadillac division and told him the story and sent along a copy of a bill of sale for my father's 1943 Caddy. The bottom line was, they didn't do shit for me and now I'm the very satisfied owner of my second Honda. I trade them in when the warranty expires. I have yet to have reason to take them back to the dealer for service and I get way more money at trade-in time. Oh, I forgot, the Cadillac dealer called me about 3 months after I purchased my first Honda and offered to give me back every dollar I paid for it on a new Caddy. I told him it was too little too late!

I bought a 2004.5 LLY in December w/ 23k on it for $31k (see sig for specifics). From my last vehicle my TCO was $520 a month, so that was my target (cost of car plus repairs plus regular maintenance). I bought the extended warranty for just under $2k at dealer, 100,000 mi, no deductable. My thinking was that I'm keeping this monster until I kill it good, so I need to know that I only have to write a $520 check each month and no matter what, for the next 77,000 miles, that is all it will cost.

I do kind of feel like a punk though - the whole point of buying a serious truck is that it doesn't break down (I have a grownup job and a small remodeling buisness which I use the truck for). On principal alone I kind of want something to break, right? (grin)

I bought a warranty with my truck from Olympic care it cost about $1,700 for 4 additional years or 45K additional miles. It has been well worth the investment. I have had the truck for only 4 month and have had over $4,000 in repairs so far. I have owned two dodge cummins truck before this and I will defiantly go back to a cummins as soon as I can pay this thing down a little. I have had to have both front wheel hubs replaced, one of the thermostats stuck open, it has gelled up twice this last winter even with a cover on the front and anti gel (double dose), the transmission had to be drop because a pump was leaking, the computer had to be flashed twice, there is now an oil leak between the motor and the transmission, and last but not least the front differently is now leaking to. I will never own a Chevy product again. This will teach me to try something new. I know I am going to get some bad feed back about this post, but I just want you to be aware of the trouble you can have with these trucks, and I hope I am just one of the few. By the way I only have 40K miles on the truck. Good luck

You can go just about anywhere and find a Chev/GM dealership nearby. With the GM warranty if anything needs fixing there are no questions or hassles of any kind. Go to the dealer and you don't have to worry about if some insurance company off somewhere will back their warranty. So far mine has only been used to replace an upper steering shaft at $900.

Got mine from the dealer I bought the truck from. After calling around to every dealer in town I saw over $1500 difference in the price of the same warranty. It's all who you deal with. I couldn't believe the different quotes I recieved on the same warranty from all of the dealers around me. My dealer even beated calling GM directly. I look at it this way. If I bought a new duramax 2 months payments would be more than what I paid for the ext warranty. Good for another 3yr 36000 mi.

Some warranties don't pay off. I know the guys at my dealership pretty well and they've told me about how bad some warranties are. The nice thing about GMPP is that they don't screw around. Take it in for repair and it gets fixed, no questions. Mine has covered a $900 steering shaft/bearing assembly, the one that attaches to the steering wheel, and a $500 front wheel bearing replacement. Everything's so expensive it doesn't take much to cover the cost of a warranty. These are awfully good trucks but something major goes out and it's serious money.

As long as your vehicle is within the 3 year/36,000 mile warranty period, you can still purchase the factory extended warranty (GMPP or Majorguard). If you have passed it , you must find an aftermarket one. Ask some of the dealers near you who they prefer and doesn't give them any problems when there is a claim. There are alot of ripoff's. Do your research before you purchase!:D

So if the regular warranty has ran out you can't get the GMPP. It has to come from somewhere else?
