In reading lots and lots of messages on all sorts of bulletin boards (diesel related), I never see any mention of the gooseneck adapter attached to the 5th wheel trailers to reduce all the clutter of a 5th wheel in the bed of your truck. Seems that this would be a very attractive option to the regular 5th wheel attachment and convenient as well, since all you have to do when not towing is take the ball out of the bed and turn it over and have a flat pickup bed.

On the Dually vs SRW I read an article where a business owner who travels thru Arizona, pays $1,000.00 a year for driving a dual wheeled one ton. He is switching to the SRW one ton to avoid the taxes and says that the SRW will actually tow more than the Dually is rated for, not to mention when a blow out occurs with the dually, that you might as well get ready to replace the fiberglass hip fender on the side that blows out cuz of the damage to it.

New and looking into Diesels and towing 5th wheel travel trailer. Your long time experience is appreciated. :D

dont have longtime experience but I am doing just that. I am using a GN adapter on my new 5er, checked with manufacturer and they said it was fine. I am using a B&W turnver ball with an RV1 adapter (made by po up industries). the adapter will give me 5 more inches of clearance for my short bed, combined with an extended pin box on the 5er I will be set. i looked at clean bed solutions with the fifth hitches and none are as clean as a GN ball, not to mention the load capacity differences.........

Its a $100 a month to be exact. I will have to step down to a 2500 to avoid it. SRW alone won't do it. Only applies to commercial vehicles.

I have a B&W turnover ball with the 5th wheel companion hitch which has an 18k pound towing capacity. The 5th hitch comes out of the truck and leaves a clean bed.

ski1 did the correct thing. You have to talk with the 5er manufacturer and get their OK. A GN hitch puts a large torsional load on the 5th wheel and some manufacturers will refuse warranty work.

I am very pleased with my B&W companion hitch and I do not have to worry about any warranty issues.

Just my $.02 worth.

We bought a garriage 5th wheel (2003) and the dealer asked why we'd want to do that to a new rig. Said the extra racking on the 5th wheel was not a good thing. Seemed like a good idea to me but we went with the underbed mount. You can take the 5th wheel hitch out & have a flat bed but I seldom do. Suckers heavy.
