My vacuum pump dumped on me,so every now and then I get service engine soon light.I see some have removed the pump and mounted a mechanical spring on the wastegate. Is this better than the pump and if so,where can I find the setup to do this. Thanks

Heath Diesel sells one, or you can search here and find out how to build your own. I opted to repair my vacuum system, as I seem to be the only fan on the board of the factory system. Don't install the manual version until you have a boost gauge -- at a minimum. EGT and boost is better.
Put your vehicle information in your sig so we know what you have.

I have a boost gauge, and pyrometer.I contacted Heath and they say I shouldn`t use their turbo master without their ecm, which I can`t afford,Kennedy sells a turbo master but they say I should use the vacuum setup. Is it better to use a manual boost control or vacuum pump, because I`m really confused. Thanks for any help, and I have made a signiture but it won`t post under my name, sorry still trying to figure this site out.

you can use a t/m without the ecm upgrade. i did it for over a year. i removed the vacuum pump but am not sure if the S needs it or not. i have the F vin. i am of the opinion the vacuum pump is needed on the S for emissions. i can sell you a working vacuum pump and wastegate actuator for 50.00 Ed

You can put a Turbo-master on without a boost gauge, but only a Heath one... the unit is precision-made and delivers consistent boost when used as designed. Because they know the exact compression rate and curve for the parts, they can predict accurately how much boost a given linear setting will provide.
I wouldn't recommend trying this with a home-made one, 'cause you don't know how much boost you'll create, and over-doing it isn't a smart idea.
It ain't that homebuilt units are bad, just that they are each an unknown quantity unti they've been tested and measured.
As for taking off the vacuum pump on an 'S', it can be done, but it messed up the EGR and can result in codes if not plugged off properly. Not really an issue on an 'F'...
I'm surprised that Heath said not to use the TM without their PCM... Bill told me that it would work fine with a stock PCM, but that it really worked well with the Max-e-Tork, because the programming took into account the consistent boost levels. I know a lot of guys that installed the Turbo-master first, because that's what they could afford at the time and hadn't done the downpipe yet.
Are you sure they said NOT to use it?

further to what jifaire says, i built a home made t/m and did so not having ever done it before. I followed some posts about how to do it and set off on it. i had it set pretty good as i had it set for 10 lbs max. it was pretty consistent on how it functioned and i thought i did it pretty good. bill heath gave me a t/m (free) when he set me up with a hp4 and new injectors. the boost pattern it holds now is 15 lbs max. their setting. i think the heath unit gives me a better boost pattern overall as they are engineers, not me. for the coin, you can build your own or go tried and tested. One last thing,is there a noticable differance between using the TM or vacuum pump.I see alot using the TM,so there must an advantage to using it.Thanks again
