your in the tranny section here, but are you sure it is not the pilot injection turning off above 2500 rpms ?

I think its the pilot injection as well, turns off after 2500-2700, and it sounds nasty/loud, but when you give it a tiny bit more gas, it goes away, and comes back if you let off it. It's wierd, but I think it's normal.

as long as it's normal. i wasnt sure if it was a tranny problem or a engine problem but i assumed tranny.

thanks

At the risk of sounding ignorant, what's 'pilot injection'?

Pilot injection is a new emissions thing I think. For the noise/sound of the engine. Basically, instead of doing a full spray of fuel, it primes the cylinder with some fuel before the rest of the fuel is injected so the combustion is not so loud, but is instead gradual, or something along those lines, it really brings down the clackity sound that normal diesels make. If you notice, the LLY is A LOT quieter than most other diesel engines.
