Does anybody know about this new material the block is being made of? Is it lighter than steel? If so, how much?
I'm thinking that a light weight engine with the torque numbers that we're seeing would be a FANTASTIC engine for a inboard/outboard drive on a boat. :ro)

I'm curious too. It may be job security for the GM techs if its heavy enough to knock out hub bearings on a regular basis like the HD's do.

The weight will be very light compaired to simalar diesel engines because of the heads being made of cast aluminum and the block made of compacted graphite iron, which is as strong or stronger then the cast iron block and also makes it much lighter. I'll have to keep looking for some exact numbers.

Would a diesel work in a high performance boat, or just more for a cruiser type boat? I would think not turning a lot of rpm's would be a problem for boaters....

They already have diesels in high performance boats. Was an article in Diesel Power a couple months back about it.

These motors should turn-up more RPM"S---plus someone will develope a super-charger or better yet-a turbo driven super-charger!!!!!!!! Look at Audi's GTP TD!!
