: Uphill 6.5 Trailer Pulling Video
CanadianRigger 01-05-2005, 10:43 PM Well i had to take my trailer in for some repairs as the furnace died with the cold weather here and i remembered to take my cam with me.
I'm an oilfield worker not a camera man so the video is kinda funky but you'll get to see how it did.
I went back and fourth from Speedo/Tack to Boost/Pyro for reference. Pay no attention after the speedo hits 100 km/hr (60 MPH) as just after 100 i was cresting the hill, this hill is only estimated to be in the 5%-6% grade but i do not know for sure, i didn't get a pic of the hill from a distance but will be going back that way to pick up the trailer in a couple of days and will try to remember to get a pic of it. The hill is about 1.2 km's long (3/4 mile) with passing lane. I think the truck did pretty darn fine pulling only 3/4 mile up that grade from a dead stop and achieving over 60 MPH and was still climbing. Pic of truck and trailer is at the end of the video.
Crank up the volume and Enjoy that 4" exaust! (http://www.canadianrigger.com/chevy/chevy.htm) (6.7 meg download)
nvmtnlion 01-06-2005, 02:41 AM CR,
Son of a gun that sounds sweet!! I can't wait until my exhaust arrives!!
Thanks for sharing!
Thanks CR !! Sweet !! Offhand, what was max concurrent coolant temp, boost pressure, egt's?
CanadianRigger 01-06-2005, 12:15 PM No problem. Show and tell always seems to work best for me.
spindrift 01-06-2005, 12:19 PM CR...pullin a trailer at 120 MPH!! If the Mounties would have ever caught up with you, I'm sure they'd lock you up and throw away the keys. You're one crazy guy. So...what are Canadians doing without the NHL?
:D
CanadianRigger 01-06-2005, 12:26 PM Thanks CR !! Sweet !! Offhand, what was max concurrent coolant temp, boost pressure, egt's?
Coolant never went above 90C by the top.
Max turbo psi was 16 psi and pretty much held 15 psi throughout the run.
EGT's post turbo max @ 1050 F at the top of the hill and increased to 1100 after the crest. I think that is safe for my truck as my sensor is within 3" of the flange off the turbo. Others i've seen appear to be mounted about 12" below the flange and they say safe max EGTs there is 1050 F.
If you use the full screen feature on media player the video should enlarge enough to see the Turbo and EGT gauges with less quality but you should be able to make it out, the pause feature helps to.):h

Sorry to burst your bubble, Canadians only get Km's/hr. I'm not that crazy. If you look closely you can see MPH under the KPH.
Hockey - NHL.... whats that? lol

I guess I should have used this ;) , not this :D . Oh well, you're not the only one who thinks my sense of humor is a bit twisted.

I sent you an email reply but it came back with a 553 error. Heres the info you wanted to see.
I got the exhaust installed @ Kal Tire, it was a D'Max 4" kit, just had to change one pipe I think from the kit. It was a little pricey at $860 with tax Canadian installed including the 3" mandrel downpipe and a $118 x 5" tip. Parts without the tip were $580.00 for the do it your selfer.

I love a good sense of humor, sometimes i guess i'm just a little slow.:)

Glad you're finally happy with your 6.5. You ARE aren't you?
I'm shocked that the ECM didn't pull back fuel with sustained boost pressures of 15+.
I would have liked to see an IAT gauge on that pull.
Juancho 01-06-2005, 03:20 PM Forget the 120 MPH. What about the 275 psi on the oil pressure gauge?):h

Yes fairly happy):h , but could always be happier!! I have one opening in my pod for a third gauge and i think IAT might be what i go for, not sure yet. When i had the reflash done this guy was a wizard with programing and i think he's set it up not to cut back fuel, i think he knows every part and file contained within the programing in the ECM and can make it do anything.
Ever hear of Dyno Industries?

Now thats funny!

Just curiou about RPM's. What do you normally run at 65 MPH? Are you pulling in 4th. If so what has your experience been?
Thank,
Dan

IIRC rpm's are around 2300-2400 and locked up in 4th at that speed with the 4:10 gears, normal pulling on a relatively flat road with the cruise on it will never kick down a gear, needs a hill to make it kick down, if its kicking down continually i'll just pull it into 3rd until i've reached the top. I don't have a tranny temp gauge to see how hot it gets. I think the shift kit helps alot in reducing slippage while shifting, if you notice the tach in the video when it shifts its a pretty quick shift. When not pulling a trailer you really notice it grabbing the next gear, if i had more power i'm sure i'd get a squawk out of the tires going from 1st to 2nd.
Texas Diesel Guy 01-06-2005, 06:39 PM Sweet vids man, you said it, show and tell rules.
Mackin 01-06-2005, 06:53 PM NICE all they way around. The Exhaust sounds sweet ,you really have the 6.5 running nice,I'm jealous.Shifts great also.
Real nice web site you have set up also.
Keep it coming!
CanadianRigger 01-06-2005, 07:15 PM Thanks for the comment Macklin, coming from you thats very much appreciated. As to the website, it needs tons of work that i don't have time for, to busy trying to put my consutling program on CD for retail sale.
A few more mods to the truck and i should have rods flying out the bottom... lol
partsguy662 01-06-2005, 09:25 PM I have to admit, I've heard lots of 6.5s, and yours by far is the best sounding one that I have ever heard http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/images/smilies/biggrin.gif Keep the vids coming, they're great to watch!
CanadianRigger 01-06-2005, 09:38 PM Geeze i didn't think you guys would like it that much, i may just have to get the wife to tape a full throttle drive by for you next so you can really hear the 6.5 puttin out!!!
CanadianRigger 01-06-2005, 09:50 PM WOW! I was just watching another 0-60 run i didn't post and comparing it to the trailer pull video, watching the tach tells the tale of the shift kit, it was rather sluggish changing gears before but now its almost immediate, what a diff, just like night and day!
Helmet 01-07-2005, 10:33 AM Awesome vid CR, that sound is incredible!
What is the brand of muffler you used?
Also, for the experts here: what sounds better straightpipe or CR's sound?
Just searching around looking for the best option for my exhaust ;)
Cheers,
Helmet
CanadianRigger 01-07-2005, 11:58 AM Helmet - I'm pretty much straight pipe right out.
I have no muffler, 3" Mandrel turbo down pipe, 3.5" x 4" x-over and then 4" out over the axle and out the factory position behind the wheel with a 5" stainless tip all mounted above the frame rails.
Helmet 01-07-2005, 01:30 PM Funny, your truck almost sounds like a gasser...
and that's definetly not a bad thing :)
(note to self: get straight piped!)
Cheers,
Helmet
CanadianRigger 01-07-2005, 11:09 PM Its not much but i had to take the pic from a distance to get the perspective of the hill. I took a pic from the bottom but when you hold the camera at near the same grade as the hill it just looked flat, what a dummy eh! So heres the hill anyways and a couple others on the way.
Bumpin' Yota 01-08-2005, 10:06 AM What is all that white stuff? How did you guys get that beach sand all over the place up there? :D
hehehehe I love being in florida - no evil white goop falls from the sky!
Nice vid!!! Now do the same run from the top of the hill going down!! :D
CanadianRigger 01-09-2005, 05:38 PM Here's a short driveby video, the wife was the camera woman this time but none the less cut some shots short, i guess were just not good with camera's...lol
Driveby Video (http://www.canadianrigger.com/chevy/chevy.htm) Don't forget to crank up the volume!
I also took out my new GPS toy today, hooks directly to the computer and works pretty good except i was having trouble getting good elevations but i think these numbers are correct.
Hill was 1200m long, bottom was 882.1m & top was 921.6m, can anyone work out the grade of the hill from these numbers as i'm curious to know?
Next was using the speedo feature of the GPS to see if my speed was correct, well my speedo was out by 3 to 4 Kph with my 265's (stock was 245's), i was doing my 0-60 MPH runs before going to 100 Kph (which was actually 104 Kph) but didn't think to figure out that 60 MPH is only 96.5 Kph so...........
New 0 - 60 MPH is actually 10 seconds, now that i can live with but i still want to improve it some more. :ro)
Silvy 01-09-2005, 05:59 PM Awesome video:D and kudos on the 10 sec 0-60! Your videos are nice and clear and don't go frame by frame like some. How do you connect the vid camera to your computer? P.S. the grade of your hill was 3.3%
CanadianRigger 01-09-2005, 07:33 PM I connect the camera with a firewire cable to the laptop after the video is taken and download it to the computer, i just use the windows movie maker software to edit it a bit from there. Im going to sell this one and get another with the memory card as this one doesn't have it, it records to mini dv tapes.
Only 3.3% grade, i new i didn't trust the elevation readings, i was sure it was more than that.
SuperTuscan 01-09-2005, 08:17 PM CR,
Great stuff. I am especially impressed that you got your wife to film you as you sped by!
BTW, I found this 4 inch system from SSDiesel (http://www.ssdieselsupply.com/products.html?pid=10&PHPSESSID=2323b8befd732b76a4b1cc52259fa17f) Supply if anybody needs another data point for comparison. $350 looks like a good price.
Texas Diesel Guy 01-09-2005, 09:52 PM Based on the distance and elevation you gave, I came up with the same 3.3% grade.
921.6 - 882.1= 39.5 / 12 = ~3.29 / 100m.
Nice Vids BTW, glad to see your finally getting some decent 0-60 times ;)
CanadianRigger 01-09-2005, 10:23 PM I will work on getting below 10 secs over the next few months...
Bumpin' Yota 01-10-2005, 01:31 AM What was your 0-60 when stock with the OEM tires and what was the tire size? Im just trying to compare. Right now our dually with OEM tires and L65 engine does 0-60 in about 12-13 seconds without brake torquing.....
you dont have a stud girdle kit to protect the bottom end's main webs do ya?
The block itself has me scared more than anything about modding this engine for power...
Turbine Doc 01-10-2005, 10:49 AM Yota;
CR has high nickel content block not used in our engines not many fails reported with it, so sould not need girdle for normal driving, but going for low 0-60 times is putting added stresses not intended by GM for these engines so girdles may be cheap insurance.
CanadianRigger 01-10-2005, 12:31 PM TD thats nice to know, but i do seem to have a problem here with fuel consumption, its going through lots for some reason....):h
You see that black smoke on take-off!:ro)

If my memory serves me stock 245's assuming the speedo was correct (it should have been) my time was slightly over 15 sec's. No stud girdle kit yet, hoping it will hang together here. It would appear i've cut my time by 1/3. Is that a 1/3 HP gain also?
