Okay . . . .
Since you all have been such an awesome resource (thank you all again for that!), I wanted to see if I could try to stump you again. Sorry for the long description, but I want to give as much info. as possible.
My '95 K2500 Sub is a beast - generally starts and runs great. There is a quirk with the starting system, however. I know the starter works (at least most of the time) because the thing usually cranks like a beast.
Sometimes, however, if the truck has been run for a while (like out doing errands from place-to-place), or if I run it for 25 minutes and then it sits in my garage at work for a several hours, when I turn the key to start it it just clicks once and that's it. The batteries are fine. The connections appear to be fine. Here's the odd part. If I let the truck sit for a few more hours (so it cools down), it fires up like new.
When I purchased the truck the guy said he had replaced the starter a few times only to find out that the issue was with the battery cables . . . not the starter. The battery cables look fine. I'm thinking it's the solenoid, but don't really know.
Any thoughts? And thanks for sharing your time and expertise!
