: help with my litle whipy 10 bolt rear end!
chevy1500z71 01-17-2008, 05:46 PM ok im puting it together right now and i realy need some questions answered, i posted it on the fullsizechev forum but all they want to do is bash me for not swaping a 14 bolt(cant afford it) so i got a detroit locker about to go in and my new bearings from the rebuild kit dont seem to fit, i know i should have to press them on but they seem WAY off like 1/4" or so to small. as anyone had experience with a detroit in a 10 bolt? were can i buy these special bearings?
between summit and ring and pinion i have 70$ in shiping that aint worth a dam now that i have to wait anyway, i wanted it to run by monday because i have a job interview...
sory for any bad spelling i typed quick because obviosly im in a prety bad mood
benjammin 01-17-2008, 09:59 PM You must have received either wrong bearings or wrong locker, compare them to your originals. An interference fit is usually just a few thousandths difference.
zerogravity58 01-17-2008, 10:07 PM They should take the same bearings...Ive swapped carriers before. If worse comes to worse take the bearings off the old carrier and try and put them on the new one. Ive had summit send me the wrong stuff before. Honestly i dont know why they would bash you over there....My old 92 s10 had a 8.5 10 bolt in it and i went 10.5's @131 MPH at the dragstrip with it. I ran that rear for 3 years with no problems.
chevy1500z71 01-17-2008, 10:26 PM i bet your s10 didnt have 35" tires on a hevy truck tho. honestly a 14 bolt would be a beter idea than puting money into the 10 bolt but lets be honest, am i realy gona break the 10 bolt again? it lasted thru several tractor pulls and who know what else my previouse owner did to it, when i called him and asked him what locker it had because i just blew it up about a week ago he told he it was a mirical it lasted so long. i figured out my problem tho, its not a carrier its a full locker that replaces the carrier but you probably know that. anyhow its made so that it can be used on diferent year 10 bolts than JUST my pre 98 10 bolt by using diferend bearings. a ford 9" carier bearing happens to be what will fit around the detroit locker and will be the corect overall size to fit in my rear end. i caled summit and asked even tho i didnt order the locker from summit they were still helpfull. all i ordered from summit was a fuel pressure tester(whole other story behind that) and a crome cover for my 10 bolt. thanks for the help. the fokes on fullsizechevy are smart people but can get rediculus with there opnions sometimes, i had 100+ posts on telling me not to fix my 10 bolt, like what am i gona do leeve the truck on jack stands untill i can afford a 14 bolt. and i got like 3 or 4 of those 100 responses actualy helping me build my 10 bolt

i had my own bearings that i already bought that fit a stock carrier, it pisses me off that i filled out a whole form on if the locker will fit my aplication and made sure that i told them that if it requires special bearings let me know before i spend 40$ shiping the lokcer 3 day select but they just shiped it anyway without tellign me id need the ford 9" bearings to make it work, what would i do without summit tech help lol and i didnt even order the locker from summit...
BudTX 01-17-2008, 10:36 PM 14 bolt FFs must be hard to come by where you live. They are $200 all over the place around here.
zerogravity58 01-17-2008, 10:38 PM this is true....i didnt have 35" tires but i was running 30" tires and cutting 1.45 60's on my 8.5 10 bolt with stock 31 spline axles :D All i had in mine was a spool and c clip eliminators along with a support cover...

First off, why would you need Ford 9" bearings? I put a lockright, kinda like a detroit but not a full carrier replacement, in my old s10, it had the "special" 8.625" axle and not the 8.5" axle, lots of fun getting the right parts for the thing. GM Just had to change it from the 8.5" to the 8.625" in year 2000, same year as my s10. Its a headache I know where your at.
You might be ok with the 10 bolt for a little while but if you upgrade your axle shafts, get some stronger ones you should be fine. I know of a few people who run a 10 bolt with 500hp or so, along with 35in tires.
chevy1500z71 01-18-2008, 09:34 PM well i got a set of ford 9" bearings pressed on and some races for another ford rear end(cant remember) and it worked fine. the ford 9" hapened to have abearing that will fit in another ford rear end models race that fit in my rear end and the bearing was the corect size to fit the locker... it all worked out good, this is what detroit syas that you need to do not some niger rig. drove it a while today after i did it, it makes a litle noise whene i decelerate becaue i didnt set the backlash the same as it was when i took it out because i took it out before i knew i had to measure my backlash. i got the backlash at .06 or somewere between there and .10, to be honest i had a hard time figring out how to read the backlash but i got it prety good and its all workign fine now so i guese i have nothign to wory about... i torqued the ring geer down to 120ft pounds and the bearing caps to 60ft pounds... hope thats right. i honestly cant belive that i actulay am relying on something that i put together as important as the rear end and its working flawlessly. needless to say im very happy... except i have some engine trouble now but atleast its running, but not that great. its runing pig rich and black smoking since i put a biger fuel pump on so i check the fuel pressure and its 13psi? 13psi should be leen if anything. the plugs were pitch black so i changed them and it runs about as good as normal but its slowely working its way toward black smoking and idleing at 400rpm again, why is it fouling plugs??????
heres a video of how it ran whene the plugs were all fouled, it runing good now with new plugs but its already starting to feel more and more liek how its runing i the video, not wanting to start and startign with a cloud of black smoke
