I don;t have any other reason to suspect IP timing as the truck runs good otherwise. This knock just cannot be found as of yet. Gets better with throttle and most obvious at idle. What are the symptoms of IP timing issues? It does not smoke too bad (have not had much time with it yet though), starts in the cold, idles good, smooth throttle. I am venting a bit through the PCV breather. Light, continuous stream of smoke.

What will this truck act like with a broken valve spring retainer? Could that be the case here?

Its probably ip timing or the injectors. A little knock is no big deal if it does away under load. My truck knocks pretty good when its cold, but its just the factory cold start advance programed in. Id say ip timing is too far advanced. Just try to turn it back a hair, should make it a little softer. Of course I am assuming it has the old type pump.
