Hey guys,
I need some ideas. I went to leave work today. Truck was idling in the parking lot for about 10 minutes 'cause it cold here. I go to leave and realize I forgot something and need my keys to open my office. Shut truck off, return, fire her up put in reverse...CLUNK.. notice check engine light is on.Hmmmmm shut it off thinkin' it would reset..no dice. Drive home half in 4 wheel high half in 2 wheel high. Get to my house put it in reverse, WHAM, feels like wiped out u-joints. I also notice the gear selector light does'nt light in reverse or neutral. Try a couple more times shift to forward and reverse Big clunks both times:( ....I run an EDGE on #2 and don't beat on the truck very often......ideas?

You need a new NSBU if the shift indicator doesn't light. This also explains your hard engagement into reverse. You should also next time post this in the Allison section as this is not a true Emergency.

same thing happened to me last week, but also it did not want to shift past 3rd. gear. Got home and called the dealer, said bring it down. Started it again , bang into reverse and drive but now had all gears. It was the neutral safety/range switch. All is well now.

This NSBU switch is doing things that even surprise me. I am now thinking of putting on a new one on ever Ally I work on.

Help me understand this, does limping the tranny make the gear indicator lights not work properly, or when limping the tranny does that screw up the NSBU and the NSBU causes the gear indicator problems? The NSBU makes perfect sense. Or, is it just coincidence that they happen together?

Thanks.

Think it's just coincidence, Huck. The NSBU failure is most commonly associated with water/salt/slush/ice intrusion and contamination - so that's why more people are having trouble at this time of year. Improved version has a better shaft seal and a shield. I'm still on my original 2001 with no problems so far, but keeping my fingers crossed here in the middle of a very wet Ohio winter.
