: Intermediate Steering shaft Replacement..now my steering is off!!!

Took the truck into the stealer yesterday to get the new intermediate steering shaft put in under warranty. I drove the truck home last night and found the steering to be very tight, but the wheel is now rotated about 30 degress to left when I am going straight down the road. The truck doesn't pull or seem to be out of alignment. I like having the new feeling tight steering, but having to look at my steering wheel being off going straight down the raod ticks me off.

I called the service manager and he says the intermediate steering shaft only goes on one way, so there is no way my steering wheel could be off. That is BS, I know for a fact it wasn't like that before they put in the new part.

Am I screwed or can something be done?

Make sure they still have your old shaft, and have them remove the new one and compare the indexing. That much off should be visible. I haven't heard any complaints of this before, must be poor machining on the new one you got. I would never accept it as it is.

Thanks,

I called the dealer and they are going to look at it. I would rather them put the old one back in then have a steering wheel that is off.

Sounds more like they screwed with the steering box adjustment or something as the shaft can really only go on 1 of 2 ways ... correct or 180 degrees off in which your steering wheel would be "upside down" ...not 30 degrees off.

How 'bout a mis-built shaft? Maybe it was built with the splines not indexed correctly? Remember, GM hasn't figured out how to build them right since '99, so it is possible...

Sounds like the steering shaft assembly manufactue may have misaligned the splines when they assembled the shaft assembly.

If it's mis-manufacturered I'm sure GM can get it straightened out in about 6 months and a call to China. :)
