Checking things out under the hood and on the passenger fender directly beside the air box, is a square piece of paper like product with metal backing. Mine was folded in half and pushed below the air box intake. I pulled it back up and stuck it back to the fender where it looked like it had been before.
Is this the right place for it? Shiny side facing air box and stuck to the fender well? There is a square hole in the fender it covers and I just want to make sure the air dosen't flow that way.
Any help will be great!

Your best bet is to remove it completely before it gets sucked into the air box restricting air flow. Its just a deflector of sorts and does nothing more then cause problems when it gets sucked in.

While changing oil on my 2003 Duramax New Years Day I noted the insulation on the driver side firewall was mostly gone. Some fiberglass, black paper and aluminum foil was still stuck to the firewall. Some bits of fiberglass was still under the hood and some was scattered around and under the front of the truck. I plan to ask the dealer about it when I take the truck in for a fuel filter change.

I hope you'er right that it really has no purpose. It was blocking air box a little before I pulled it up. I'm on my way to take it off right now. Thanks.

On the 2001 Trucks there was a tube connecting the air box to the hole in the fender but GM found that too many vehicles were sucking in water. They then removed the tube from the fender to the airbox and covered the hole in the fender with the metal covered paper to block it off. Many people have removed it to allow cooler air to enter the air box, but you do so at your own risk

Purpose is to prevent water injestion through the airbox. The snorkel on the 01 trucks was the major cause, and IMO the aluminum sticker may be overkill, but that is the reason for it. Mine's on nice and tight after 1.5+ years, 34k miles. Leaving it there.

Pulled mine off. The Volant intake gets most of it's air through those two openings.

Anyone notice any more turbo whistle with the foil removed?
