I'm new to the Diesel world(for 2 months now) & have a Holeshot question. I have a 02 dmax cc 2500hd swb & a hypertech tuner. I noticed that set at stage 2, from a dead start(no power brake) I have a good 1-2 sec stall before the engine finally revs up & takes off(no tires spin either in 2 wheel hi) It really feels like a dog on the low end. I took off the tuner & tried again...stock & it was better. When i stomped it...it responded better, no stall...just a 1 sec lag then took off. I put the tuner back on, on stage 1 & it was better than 2 on the holeshot. I have not tried stage 3 for fear of limping the tranny. Since i have not driven another Dmax(stock) to compare it to mine, i have no idea if the lag from a dead stop is normal or even what is considered normal, Or should it respond like a gasser when i stomp it. Overall i could tell a big difference compared to stock with the tuner, that is kicking it at mid RPMs but on the low end, i'm disappointed. Any comments to clear this up? Should i can the Hypertech & go to a Perdator? Will the Predator respond better on the low end? THANKS

This should probably be posted in the competition forum, or the power and perf. forum, but your problem is turbo lag. It takes a second or two after you stomp the pedal to get the turbo spoolin'. When drag racing everyone usually does a brake stand to put the engine under load so you have boost when the light turns green. I will advise though don't launch to hard with stock tie-rod sleeves, and it helps to crank the t-bars all the way down. This is usually done in 4 wheel drive also.

On a side note I think you will be fine on the top setting of the Hypertech, it is a pretty mild programmer, and probably doesn't make enough power to limp the trans. if you are careful. You may want guages if you decide to do so, just so you can keep an eye on EGT. Someone will correct me if I am wrong.

On edit: If you don't tow anything in the high setting, I wouldn't even bother with gauges, running with that programmer. They are nice to have though.

Thanks...for the info. I'm going to try the stage 3 this evening. I called hypertech & they suggested i try it on stage 3 too, to see how the holeshot reaction would be vs. stage 2 & stock. They were puzzled to hear the the Lag was better on stage 1 & worse on 2 Any other comments or suggestions?

I bet your lag will only be slightly better. Turbos just take time to spool. The best way around it is power-braking. The higher setting will probably be slightly better, only because it low-boost fuels a little more. Good luck and happy racing.;)

Oh just to add...I not racing the truck in any way & normally don't stomp it from idle. I guess that's why i took this long for me to even have reason for these questions thanks again

No problem, anytime. Be careful though, if you were to perhaps, maybe, feel froggy and try what I said in my previous post you may be hooked also. Then there is no going back.:ro)
