So I decided to upgrade the headlights on my truck so that I could see the road at night.
At first I was going to put some relays on the head lights so that the lights would be getting more power then the switch in the dash was giving them. And replace the 4 lamps with new sealed beam units. Well I was shopping around and found 'Euro Style Headlamps' for my truck. They are not sealed beams, but take a bulb you put in the back of the lamp housing.
The voltage at the headlight plug with the truck off was 9.8v  and at the top of the battery was 12.4v. So obviously my stock wiring was a bit on the weak side, And I am sure that if I would have just put the relays on the headlights there would be a noticeable difference before/after.
Here is the wiring diagram...

I put 2 relays on the driver side fender, They are triggered by the high/ and low beam wires in the harness. After the relays I pulled out the old wires out of the rest of the harness. I replaced them with 12 gauge for the highs, and 14 for the lows, and new 12 gauge grounds. This is a Huge improvement from the stock wiring. I would guess the stock is 18 gauge, and where GM splices the wires together it was just taped up so there was corrosion at most of the splices. Plus the passenger side grounds were pretty well gone the main ground was cut and frayed in a few places. I am sure I could have stopped here and just slapped in some sealed beams, and been good but my new light housings and lights were ordered, and on the way.

I bought Hella 165mm Headlight that accepts a H4 style bulb for the top 2 lights. For the bottom 2 I got cheaper 'AutoPal' lights that take a H1 style bulb. The top 2 are not DOT Approved, so hopefully no one notices. I am unsure about the bottoms, I don't have them yet. Here are some pics...

Here is a shot of them in use. (about 25' from the house.)

Overall they are awesome! :D I took them for a drive, and it is like driving a new car. The high beams seem to be unfocused and just throw light all around, but I am sure when I get the bottom 2 installed it will be a lot better. Just for the top 2 housings I paid $60, $15 for the bulbs, and about $10 for wiring stuff. I was aiming to keep this under 70, but looks like I am over budget.

Looks like a VERY worthwhile modification. Would you be able to elaborate on where you got the headlights from?

How about some pictures of the roadway at night?

I got the top lights from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Hella-165mm-Rectangular-Headlamp-Rubber/dp/B000E0E03E
On that page it shows that you get what looks to be a 'kit' because there is 2 pictured, but all you get is one, and a boot. ( I ordered 2 expecting 4 lights) I tried to call them and email, I did not get a response. Sooo... you could look elsewhere. I just didn't have time to mess with it I need my headlights. (I did the wiring over the weekend, and the headlights came Monday) The Highbeam lights I got from eBay.

Something Else I forgot to say is that the H4 plug is wired different then the sealed beam style. I got 2 new plugs from the parts house

I will get a road pic later tonight when there is less traffic.

I'm doing the same thing to my '82, as eBay has a good set of matched lights for less than $35 a side (both high and low beam). Though, I am actually going to install HID's to really piss off people.

Looking at the pattern on the garage, and what the high beams show, I would angle the top headlights down a good amount more.

those are the same that I ordered for the highs.(take a look in his eBay store) I am curious to see the quality difference between the cheaper ones and the Hellas. And I always thought HID kits were in the 300+ range. You will have to post your findings if you buy that kit.

And the high beam pattern on these it emits almost like a Star pattern. There is no beam of any kind. So I think you need the bottom 2 lamps for the right look.

I've heard on several forums that the sub $100 HID kits are decently well built and put out just as much light as many more expensive offerings. I would certainly not claim they're BETTER at all, but for that price I can afford to get H4's in the top housing and maybe a bright yellow (euro fog) bulb for the lower H1 housing...for something different. :)

This was one of the first mods I did to my truck although I did not install the relays because I am still using relatively low wattage bulbs. I will install the relays when I go to 80-100W bulbs.
I got all of my front-end parts from LMC Truck - lights, bulbs, relays, buckets, grill and trim. Installed easily with little modification and looks awesome.
I highly recommend this mod. See my garage for pics.

Wow, thanks for the compliment! I just got it last year and I'm having a lot of fun fixing it up and trying new things. I'll try to keep updating my garage as I go.

Well I went out for a road shot, but the camera really doesn't do a great job with night shots. :o:

David, Do you know what brand name light LMC sells. I haven't come across to many different makes, Just wondering what they are selling?
The headlight relay harness lmc sells seems to be a pretty good deal.

I can't remember if I even saw a brand on the box. I was impressed by the quality of the housing though and it did have a DOT number on it as advertised. I don't remember anything unusual about the bulbs so they are probably Sylvania or something. The harness is made in Taiwan and the packaging is all in Taiwanese. The quality of the wiring and connections looks good and the brand on the relays is Shohi or something close to that.

PS, I saw that Costco.com has the Hella 80/100W H4 bulbs for $36.99 pr.
