Yes it can be fixed, assuming there is not *serious* rust in the cylinder(s).
Your best bet would be to get a cylinder hone (the kind that chucks into an electric drill) and attempt to re-hone the cylinder(s).
This will require pulling the piston from its bore. It would be a good idea to replace the piston rings at this time. (assuming you are able to clear the rust)

If you are unable to remove all the rust with just a cylinder hone, then most likely the block will need to be over-bored. This would require new, over-sized pistons/rings.

Some cracks are repairable, some are not. As the crack seems to be integral to the combustion chamber, I would hazard a guess that this particular crack is not repairable. A competent local machinist would be able to tell you for sure.

A used, good condition cylinder head should be fairly cheap. Replace the head bolts with new upon re-assembly.

Something doesn't add up. It is running and you're worried about rust in the cylinder and a cracked head? Or did you take it apart and find the crack and then the cylinder got rusty while it was apart?

Hard to tell from your post what exactly the situation is...

How do you know it has rust in it, or it's cracked, if it's running and together? Coolant I could see, but that could be just a head gasket.

no it is running when put together but when you tear it down you can see the cracked head and some rust in one of the cylinders. guessing it is because it has sat with a cracked head and water got into the cylinder. just a guess.

sorry i so dense but it helps if you are very clear . did you first run the motor and see the smoke then tear it down and find the cracked head. or did you see the cracked head and rust reassemble and run and see the smoke. ??????????? take some time and be clear as possible and the answer will come back the same way if one of us knows.

I bought the truck as is.we started it and saw smoke out the right side exhaust.when we drove it it wouldnt stay cool be cause the radiator leaked horribly but we got it to our mechanic anyway. we took it to our mechanic and he tore the motor down. he said what he saw was a rusted cylinder and though it had a cracked head because he didnt see anhy blown head gasket. thats as far as we have gotten into this project.
Hope this helps.

Easiest solution is probably a used head from a junkyard or someone in your area parting out a truck. Check your local Craigslist under auto parts and you may find someone parting out a 6.2 or even selling the whole motor for about what a new head would cost you. Obviously buy new head gaskets but also buy new bolts as the originals can't be reused.

There's been a bunch of them on ebay lately as well, apparently the '82s are known for this-if you replace it with anything other than an '82 you'll need 4 fine thread injectors to replace the coarse thread ones you have now-it wouldn't be a bad idea to let a competent machine shop look at the head to make SURE it's bad-early 6.2s don't have very good coolant circulation and are prone to blow the #8 cyl. head gasket for no apparent reason, and the cracks in the early heads can often be repaired with a sleeve.
