: Dsappointment in Baldwin Fuel filter
MONGOH53E 01-15-2008, 10:53 AM I just ordered a Baldwin Fuel filters (BF 1201 for 6.5TD) and I am not impressed with them. I use Baldwin Oil filters and fuel filters on all my trucks and equipment but this is the first time getting one for a 6.5TD specific. The fuel filter is a different design than the OEM / normal style you get from NAPA or any other supplier. It has a single hard plastic top vice a metal top and therefore it does not use the OEM plastic screw on hold down ring. The filter came in the standard Baldwin box and was not sealed in plastic it just floated in the box like any oil filter. This was part of the problem, first the filter medium is not protected from contamination. Second the medium is only attached to the plastic top with 4 tangs that slip in the top center of the medium. When I pulled the filter out the medium was not attached to the cap and after close inspection I found that the tangs that hold the medium to the cap were broken and in the bottom of the box. This same issue was on all 6 filters that I ordered. The whole assembly, if not damaged, looks to slide in to the filter housing as a whole and then you twist the whole filter on as a whole. No alignment with the teeth (Lack of a better word) on top of the housing. I am not going to use them and will find another source.
Deere3594 01-15-2008, 10:56 AM wow, Ive never seen one like that before.. thanks for the heads up
heavychevy93 01-15-2008, 01:28 PM we sell then at my work and as far as i know they are still metel the web site still shows the metal one
Ratman 01-15-2008, 03:17 PM That's kinda discouraging. I've used Baldwin filters on everything I've ever owned.
Seems everybody is shifting towards doing things "on the cheap" nowadays.
That's too bad, -the idea doesn't look like a bad one, -I mean, I like the idea of the filter element and retaining-ring being one piece, -but bad packaging and broken stuff in the box surely doesn't make a guy "warm and fuzzy", -particularly on a fuel filter.
MONGOH53E 01-15-2008, 03:57 PM Like I said I use Baldwin on everything and decided to try them for fuel filters. They may still be good filters but they just seemed cheap and a bad design that is easy to damage in shipping and installing. I have found the normal OEM style filters at a reasonable price through WWW.fleetfilter.com (http://www.fleetfilter.com) . They arw WIX which, I am sure are made by Stanadyne, for 14.41 a piece. the part number is 33376.
If you want to see a better picture of the Baldwin filter go to http://catalog.baldwinfilter.com/ and look up BF1201. I wish I would have done this before I ordered the filters. I just assumed that the filter would be the same OEM design with a baldwin medium when I ordered them.

x7ekdyi 01-15-2008, 08:32 PM Hey MONGOH53E:
I was just wondering, did you buy this directly from Baldwin or from a parts place?
Maybe if somebody whose used Baldwin fuel filters before can chime in, but if you bought this direct from Baldwin you should let them know how disappointed you are with their product and that you want a refund. If you bought this from a auto/truck parts place, I am strongly inclined to think that maybe somebody over there substituted another part for the Baldwin product and sent it to you. In either case I would contact Baldwin and let them know.
MONGOH53E 01-16-2008, 07:36 AM Was shipped direct from Baldwin ( per the shipping invoice) and well packaged in the shipping box so not damaged by the shipper. They were bought through a supplier I use for other Baldwin filters. The Supplier is taking care of the refund for the product and is also forwarding the issue on to Baldwin. I will still use Baldwin Oil filters and other Baldwin Fuel filters since I believe they are some of the best. Just not this version
Turbine Doc 01-16-2008, 02:36 PM AFIK only filter for the 6.5 is made by Stanadyne regardless whos box it comes in, maybe Baldwin is trying a reverse engineered design alternative, trying to break into the Stanadyne market does it fit ???
MONGOH53E 01-17-2008, 07:33 AM Not sure if it fits since I sent them back. But after searching it looks like someone has used them in this Thread

jrsavoie 01-22-2008, 09:07 PM They fit but the bleeders don't work. I've ended up with several of these. Can't say I really like them, because of the bleeding problems. I have to unscrew the bleeder til it bleeds around the threads. Nothing comes out the hole.
jrsavoie 01-26-2008, 11:31 AM Does anybody know if the filter element on these filters are replaceable?
On mine I noticed that you can pull the filtert off of the head.
I am considering installing 2 filters in line. I have 2 OEM filter housings. If I can get a 2 micron filter for this head it might be worth the effort to install 2 filter housings.
Would the fuel heater control run 2 fuel heaters or would it be overloaded?
What would I have to do to run 2 fuel heaters?
