: Help, Black & white smoke for miles on the Hwy
Burt4x4 01-04-2005, 08:35 PM I drive about 55miles one way from work to home. Today on my way home my 05 started smokin real bad on the freeway. I mean real bad , smoked out all 4 lanes for about 2-3 miles. I think I heard aditional ticking as well. I would accelerate tryin to clear it out and tons more smoke, mostly black pours out. I pulled over and shut it down. Popped the hood, to look at what I have no idea. I started it up and all seams normal. I continued on my way home and just small amounts of smoke came out. Not nearly as bad as it was. When I accelerate more black smoke. I use to see more of a white smoke when acceleratin hard. I just replaced the oil 500 miles ago. I used that Rottelli stuff from Shell.
Should I stop driving it?
Take it to the dealer?
Please advise?
Burt
srode 01-04-2005, 08:46 PM My suggestion:
check your oil level and make sure it isn't high then take it to the dealer. If the oil level is way high, call the dealer and have them come and get it, probably have diesel in the crankcase. My '04 LB7 did the EXACT same thing less than a month ago and it was 2 bad injectors. Your description sounds identical to what mine was doing.
Might be something else on an LLY, but it sure sounds the same.
Burt4x4 01-04-2005, 08:54 PM Just got done checking the oil and it is one notch below the F mark on the dip stick. I put exactly 10qts in w/new filter.
The dealer closest to me is not the same one I bouht it at, do you think they would actualy come get it? It's about 5miles from my house....
Keep the ideas comming...this is freakin me out-:t
socaldieseltech 01-04-2005, 09:25 PM try some fuel additive
Burt4x4 01-04-2005, 09:26 PM OK just ot off the phone with Chevy and they said bring it in so....-:t off to the dealer at 7am....it's close so I should be fine plus I figure if any damage has happened it's already done it...
Wish me luck

Burt4x4 01-04-2005, 11:36 PM So I guess all you vetren diesel owners have delt with this before?
I am as green as it gets with the diesel world so I guess I over reacted. But to be safe I will take my rig in anyway...

NorCal 2500HD 01-04-2005, 11:59 PM I would bet that when you take it to the dealership there are not going to be any codes and they are gonna say it was bad fuel.........
I had this happen to my truck along with a few other people on here...... do a search for stumble, knock and smoke, grab a cold one because you're going to be reading for a while.
There might be a chance you have a bad injector(s)..
My advice is to put some stanadyne in the tank ( i doubled up the first tank) and you shouldnt have the problem again......or any other gm approved additive
ive been running it for the last 9k miles and havnt had one issue so far........let us know the outcome....

diesel man 01-05-2005, 12:25 AM just like socalsieseltech said fuel additive is what you need . i had the same problems as you did today . the additive solved my problems . if the dealer you are bringing your truck to gives you any hassle then try bringing it to socaldieseltech .
TheLefty 01-05-2005, 01:47 PM This is the same problem that mine had sporadicly. I originally bought mine late July and first reported the problem on 8/5/04. It had been to the shop 4 times until they finally determined that it was the injectors 2,3,4 that needed to be replaced.
The extra ticking you are hearing is probably the engine choking on the excess fuel it is getting because of the injector going bad. The dealer will probably not see any codes, however, GM has been having problems with injectors 3 and 4 on certain LLY's. They were checking the flow rates on mine and everything seemed fine when the truck wasn't acting up. The main obstacle is GM restriction policy on the injectors, meaning that the dealer needs to identify which injector is acting up before they can replace.
I hope it doesn't take as long as mine did for them to figure your out. The last time mine was in the shop was 1 month to the day and that is when they replaced the 3 injectors. Since then, no problems and I couldn't be happier with my truck.
The billowing black smoke doesn't sound like an additive is going to help so make sure they test drive your truck long enough to get it to act up.
Good luck,
Cory
Burt4x4 01-06-2005, 11:01 AM Well they didn't find anythingCensored
It smoked a little this morning on the way into work-:t
I'm going to try that Stanadyne stuff? The engine seams to be running fine? The dealer said no codes were in the computer..
What are some of the names of additives you guys have used? Wich one is best?
This is my only trasportation until I get my lil S10 smoged and receive the sticker...so I need to try and fix it with the additive then go from there..
Thanks everyone, if that doesn't work then I probly have an injecter issue:confused:

1SAST 01-06-2005, 12:52 PM Does your truck have the latest reflash.

NorCal 2500HD 01-06-2005, 01:13 PM I use the Stanadyne Performance formula....works great
Burt4x4 01-06-2005, 01:54 PM Yes, they did tell me that my 'software' was uptodate so that was not the cause or something they could do to help with this issue.
I need to get a bottle of Stanadyne ASAP. I realy hope this fixes my 'sticky injecter'. I have a supplier in my home town of Modesto but I work in Pleasanton and no suppliers are listed around here(from Stanadyne's web site).
Has anyone ever found this stuff at a parts store, like Kragen or Autozone??
Thanks again everyone, I really appritate you guys helping my rookieass out:ro)
Burt
Burt4x4 01-07-2005, 09:25 AM Update:
I put 1/2 a bottle (60gal treatment) of Stanadyne Lubricity into about 34gallons of fuel. I burned about 4gallons already and my rig is no longer smoking:ro)
Well I will know for sure later today when I drive home in daylight but as far as I can tell this additive ROCKS!!!
My rig is puring like a Mnt. Lion):h
I also bought a bottle of the "All Weather" Stanadyne so after I burn the HeavyDuty stuff I'll use a few oz a tank full from now on.
THe place I bught it from does only fuel injected diesel engines and he love this stuff fer keeping injecters clean and fuel delivery smooth.
Thanks everyone for schooling me on Stanadyne:D :D
Burt
NorCal 2500HD 01-07-2005, 12:42 PM Where are you getting your stanadyne from and do they have it by the case? Im right over the hill in fremont and my distributor is in Milpitas..but they never have a full case..ill drive to p town if i have to.,..... thanks...Brian
Burt4x4 01-07-2005, 01:08 PM They have a dealer look up here:
http://www.stanadyne.com/new/ppt/index.asp
I went to AFI, Advanced Fuel Injection in Modesto near Hatch rd. & hwy 99
Not sure how much stock he has, I only bought two bottles. He had a display case with loose bottles and gallon jugs sitting on it. I would guess he has cases in back somewere.
This place only works on Fuel Injected diesel engines, so this guy knows his diesel. His shop was filled with big machines and all. anyway he swears by this stuff...
I think I recall seeing a place in Okland & Sanjose on the Stanadyne web site.
Burt
NorCal 2500HD 01-07-2005, 04:41 PM the place im going to wont order a case for me until they place an order for their stuff
ill keep looking though..thanks
NewD-MaxLLY 01-07-2005, 07:15 PM Try blueridgediesel.com. I priced it out from several places and even with shipping they were cheaper than any place else.
Could be others out there that can point you to a cheaper place.
Good luck,
Carl
PS ALL my injectors are now new. The #2 injector was replaced at 3099 miles. Replaced the other 7 at 5700 miles. 7800 miles on the pickup now. Ran Stanadyne for the first 4 tanks after the injectors were replaced and the mechanic told me to stop using it. He felt that I or anyone else should not HAVE TO use a suppliment to drive these pickups or GM should Say " Here are the keys to your new truck and a case of Stanadyne".

My co-worker said that too. But it would seam that diesel fuel is alot more unpredicable as to the quality of the fuel than gasoline is. With gas that statement would be true for sure but I'm not too sure about diesel. I bet GM uses top quality diesel in their labs. But get out here in the real world were every fill station has different quality diesel fuel. That sure seames to be the case or I am just a greenhorn rookie that reads too much off the internet, hahahahaa
Burt
PS still no smoke and my rig just purrrs along:ro)
