Had the truck at the dealers to look at a couple of warranty problems, mentioned I would be towing 4000 miles, 1/2 hour latter the mechanic asked me to have a "look see" at the braking surface on all 4 wheels, the inside surface on every rotor only had a braking contact surface of a 3/8" wide shinny surface the rest of the rotors surface were solid rust, the outsides were rusty too, (so much for my own brake inspection I did on the fly 3 weeks ago,) all rotors were turned, and drum included.

Sooooo it seems this is a common occurance on these trucks.

any thoughts????

drive safe.

very common. GM advises against turning the ebrake drum other then to remove a rust ridge.

I'm a little confused on that one. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

Inside brake pads not making good contact?

Sounds like something is wearing uneven in the caliper attach points? Or the pistons are cocked?

two guys i work with have had rotors rust to pieces in under 20k miles. they both had brakes getting weak took them in and the rotors were JUNK and they were not covered... and the pads had tons of life left. seems GM has some problms with them from what i have seen over the web but looks like the consumer is on the hook for the repair $$$ to fix it???

1988 and 1989 had similar issues. Recalls on ball joints and two piece rotors for rust.

If you pick up a used 88 or 89 CK pickup GM will replace the ball joints and rotors if they never were replaced.

I had a brake issue last year, brakes were sticking. Took to the dealer, they pulled it apart and found a bunch of rust on rotors, inside parking brake assembly and on caliper pins or slides. The tech said it looked like my truck was in 2 feet of standing water for a week. Funny, it gets parked in the garage. The brakes are better, but not back to normal. As the saying goes "whatayagonnado?".

The 1990 trucks were part of the rotor recall also. They would only cover it in certain states that had heavy road salt use.

My 88 Chev ball joints were lube free (sealed) and warranted for 55k miles, no recall and no free replacement after 55 k miles. My grandson has the truck now with 140K miles, original ball joints and rotor's. Alignment was also welded after alignment at factory and later replaced with kits under a recall program.

Hoot if you see this I'd likle to know where you got info on 88-89 ball joints. I bought my 3/4 ton 88 Chev May 87. About two years later I got a letter from GM saying my ball joints (sealed) would be warrantied for 55k miles and if I'd already replaced them at my cost with less than 55k miles on them, GM would reimburse me the cost. My grandson now has the truck with over 140k and the original ball joints are still on it and so are the original rotors. Would sure like to get n those ball jopints and rotors replaced free on that program your talking about. Did get a recall on the welded alignment points and GM replaced those with alignment kits that could be adjusted with spacers.

I don't have any documented evidence about the mileage restriction bu I think I remember it being a safety recall. I dn't think they can put mileage limits on a safety recall.

I remember having to chisel the welded on square washers when I did a lift on my 89.

My letter pertaining to the ball joints wasn't a recall, just a statement they would standby the original ball joints for 55k miles and if they failed after that I would have to pay for replacement. Is a good truck, had a gtranny seal break when I was pulling a 32' 5th up a 32 mile grade between calif. and an AF base there. Painted the whole back the ruck and almost all of thr trailer with red tranny oil, lucky no fire. Limped into Lancaster by adding motor oil where the dealer gave me a complete overhaul with new heavy duty converter for $25 deductible. He took the whole family out for lunch and dinner and evern offered motel rooms if we had to stay overnight. Even got the whole rig proffessionaly cleaned at a brand new truck center.
