: Power steering pump pulley
rtarh2o 01-14-2008, 03:46 PM I am putting a new power steering pump on my 6.2 conversion. I bought a used pump (just for the brackets, long story) and it had a double pulley on the pump. I ordered a new pump and it comes without the pulley so I ordered a pulley, it is a single pulley. I would use the used pump but either the pulley is bent or the shaft is bent. I am wondering how to get the new pulley on the new pump, it abviously has to be pressed on but I am afraid it will damage the pump in doing so, plus it doesn't appear to be a flat surface on the back anyway.

turbovanman 01-14-2008, 05:02 PM You need to buy the puller and installer tools, you can usually pick up the set at your local parts store. Unsure of cost as inherited a OTC set when I got my shop.
vxdude21a 01-14-2008, 05:26 PM its a special puller for power steering pump pulleys, I just did my pump yesterday
High Sierra 2500 01-14-2008, 06:29 PM Yeah, there is a special tool for that. If you can get the pulley off of the old pump without damaging it (tricky without proper tools, it is easy to bend) you can install it easily, just thread a bolt into the shaft and use it to press the pulley on.
rtarh2o 01-14-2008, 11:31 PM I did not notice threading on the shaft, I have a new pulley but it is a single pulley, how do I know if I need the double pulley or the single?
High Sierra 2500 01-14-2008, 11:37 PM The double pulley is for the air conditioning compressor belt on trucks with air. It is also a handy place to put a second alternator or an air compressor for onboard compressed air if you wanted. But if you don't have air (or it doesn't work) and you don't want to run anything else the single pulley is fine...

Its not on the shaft, is in the center, its 3/8 course thread.
rtarh2o 01-15-2008, 12:35 PM I do have A/C so I need to find a double pulley. The center of the shaft looked like an allen head to me, I will have to check it out further to find the threading. How do you keep the shaft from turning when torqueing down the pulley?

You thread a bolt in the center, then use a nut and washer to draw in the in pulley holding the bolt. The kits use a thrust bearing to make it easier.
High Sierra 2500 01-15-2008, 07:59 PM Since you do need the double pulley just go to one of the local parts places that has tool loaning... You'll have to put a deposit down on it, but they usually refund the whole thing when you return it. The tool will have instructions on how to do it.
Basically, I'm sure you noticed the little groove in the pulley hub. The special puller grabs that to avoid bending the pulley itself. I think I just used a funny three jaw puller I had laying around to get mine off. Then you just thread the bolt into the shaft on the pump and tighten it down. Clean out the inside of the pulley first so it goes on smooth first (I like to put a little grease in there too, seems to help). It shouldn't be too hard to tighten the bolt so you can pretty much just hold the edge of the pulley to keep it from turning...
rtarh2o 01-17-2008, 10:58 AM Got my pulley today and will try to install it today using a bolt and large washer. I don't have to remove any pulleys because I am putting a new pulley on a new pump. I got a used pump but the pulley was bent, looked like they tried to get it off with a screw driver at the salvage yard.
I guess when the bolt starts getting hard to turn the pulley is far enough on the shaft to keep it from turning.
Also, do I put it on until the pulley is flush with the shaft? If you get that wrong it won't line up with the other pulleys.
Thanks I'll let you know if I have any problems
High Sierra 2500 01-17-2008, 11:10 AM Yep, just put it on flush with the end of the shaft.
