Good buy if the frame is still solid. Drop a TBI or a multi-port 350 in it and you will have something.

A word of advice: Do it big the first time. If it's mainly a trail rig, you'll see the big boys and will immediately want more....like on this site. Don't waste money on paint and body and bling bling wheels. Ditch everything except the frame and body, scrounge boneyards for a decent 3/4 or 1 ton and transplant all of it. Invest your money in refreshing the drivetrain and a solid cage, plain steel wheels and some used swampers. Let someone else wow you with thier on board welder, air, and flux capacitor for now. Depending on how hard you look and how much you can do yourself, you can run any trail in the world for well under 5 grand. If I did it again, that is how I'd do it. I'm doing it the slow and expensive way...30's, then 31's, then 33's, then 36's, now 38.5's, wanting 44's. Lift grew from a shackle lift to a 3" spring under to a 5.5 spring over to a 8.5 spring over. Just the cash in lifts, wheels and tires (all bought new/near new)could have built the above type Jeep! Ah well. See my garage for the (old) money pit..and the new one.

Thanx guys for the advice so far, will definetly be keeping you all posted and definetly welcoming more advice. i wanna go big, but i'm gonna work on suspension and tires for now, and keep the 4.2 until it blows then spend the cash on a swap....no sense throwing out a good motor. i wanna do a lift, put it on 35's/38's(depending what i can find at the right price), beef up the suspension and driveline, and have some fun....besides my budget is so tight ellen degeneres would be jealous if you know what i mean

With that said, just keep the tires around 33/35, drive it EASY, still skip the bling, pay more attention to a tune up, belts, hoses, wiring. Nothing like showing the mega buck big boys that lots trails CAN be done on the cheap!

Wow. This is the same spot I was in. 1988 Jeep Wrangler. If you want to keep the 4.2 Howe fuel injection at the least. Truth is, stop. Go find a good V8 for your Jeep. You won't regret it. Be patient. A great trail rig takes time. I have learned numerous lessons w/ mine. Some the hard (expensive) way. You can do some really good suspension work on the cheap. I've subscribed to this thread. Keep us informed on your progress.
