I hate to even ask this :o:, but here goes:

I started to check the torque on my sig trucks’ wheels (by the book, 140#’s). A 22mm Craftsman socket fits kind of loose, although it is nice and snug on the plastic lug nuts on the center caps. When I tried to retorque, the socket will either stick on the lug nut or it spun on 2 of them. 7/8th (IIRC) is just as loose a fit and any other size, metric or std either won’t fit or freely spins cause its too big.

What the heck size socket do I need? :help2:

Or is it my sockets are old and slightly worn? I also have had this sticking issue with my old truck and my 5th wheel lug nuts, but haven’t rounded any of them, yet!

You need a 22 mm 6 point socket.
A 12 point socket will eventually round off the nuts.

A good rule that I learned when I was young is never use a 12 point socket on any bolt or nut that you know you will tighten and loosen on a regular basis. This would include lug nuts and oil drain plugs because if you ever strip one while it is torqued on you will wish that you have a socket just for these two jobs.

We make all the lug nuts for the GM trucks, have for 20+ years. Usually around 34 million a year for the full size trucks. They are 22mm hex, max across flats of .865". The across corner dimension is under what it would normally be on a standard 22 hex nut to allow clearance for the cap that screws on the rolled OD threads. Made for a 22mm or a 7/8" 6 point socket.

Thanks for your replies. Will get that 6 pt 22mm socket. This disproves my wifes' assertion that I'm the old dog you can't teach new tricks to! Course, I'm jus kiddn. Honest, honey...(just in case she reads this)

By the way, why have 12 point sockets anyway...
