: Dealer overfilled oil on my 03 Duramax

Hello,

I think my dealer may have overfilled my engine oil by two quarts when they replaced my injectors. The reason I think that, is that there were 12 quarts on the work order. I started to notice oil on my floor and then put it up on a rack to see oil all over the underneath of the truck. The dipstick showed over full by some, but not a real large amount. I think most of it blew out on a 500 mile trip. What could happen by overfilling an 03 Duramax? It also still has a smell of diesel when shut off, which was why they replaced the injectors in the first place. It is back in the shop now and I don't have much confidence that they are going to be able to repair it. Thanks for any thoughts you may have on the oil overfill problem.

are you sure its not making oil again? Or did they even change it. How bout clean it off from before?

I guess I'll have to clean it up myself this time when I get it back to see what is going on here. There was something on the work order that was qty 12 engine oil that I assume was the oil they replaced. I don't have the work order in front of me right now, but will submit the part number for those in the know. What would happen to the extra oil if a mistake was made and 12 quarts instead of 10 quarts were added?

By making oil, I think you mean leaking injectors! correct?

I had that happen twice by my dealer, both times I got home and read the invoice and was charged for 12 quarts and sure enough the dip stick proved it. The Fumoto valve came in real handy and I drained out two quarts and bingo its right on full. Dealer no longer gets to change my oil, as I do it my self:D

Yip they did it while I was standing there, then they couldn't get a reading on the STUPID DIP STICK THE GENERAL SUPPLIED soooo I pulled out the rigid plastic 1/4 inch outside hose I use for oil level and demonstrated the finer art of finding a true oil level.

drive safe.

So the Dmax takes 10qts?

OMG..this whole time i've been puttin in 3gals...so i've been overfilling it?Have I caused any damage?(lol.sry to sound dumb..)

Just because it shows 12qts doesn't mean they used every one of 'em. I can't say of course but I purchase a 5qt container of oil from wallys for my mitsubishi and only use 4. The other sits on the shelf until there is enuff for another change.
That being said ~ I can understand your deduction but the diesel smell skews the equation tho.

I can say definitively that 12 qts. probably does NO HARM. My truck was delivered new with 15 quarts. The oil was so clean and the dipstick so crappy I could barely see the true level. I ran it like this for 3k miles. I finally realized the overfill issue when I changed my oil for the first time. My 15 qt. pan was FULL!!!! I was PISSED!!!! But now at 37k miles no evidence of a problem.

Too much oil could put the oil level up to the spinning crank shaft. This could aerate the oil and now tiny bubbles are flowing through the engine. Our trucks have a crankcase breather. If the oil is REALLY overfilled or you are getting diesel fuel into the crankcase, it will exit the breather. Foamed oil can exit the breather. Most of the oil we see out of the breather occurs naturally as the oil heats and some evaporates, condensing in the breather tube. If I were you, don't worry. I already worried over a much bigger overfill for a much longer period for no reason. SPICER

So that is where the 2 quarts of gear oil went that should have been in my rear diff. I guess I will check my dipstick to see if they put it in the engine.

Maybe billed by the gallon? I have to buy four jugs to make the ten quarts.

Nar, now that we are off topic, I will be packing in the Wind River Range in September. Will be my 3rd packing trip there. Awesome range! SPICER
