I just got my 96 C3500 crew cab with the 6.5 / 4L80E and before my first tank of gas I have a problem. Started it this morning.. Engine light stayed on. It keep running fine so I took it for a drive anyways. The transmission would not shift pass 2nd gear. I tryed manually shifting it without luck. I got it back home and shoot it off. Waited a few hours then tried it again. The engine light came on again but this time it drives fine.
I guess I have to get someone with a scan tool to reset the code, but what do you think cause this error?
Thanks
Dave

Check all of your battery connections. Make sure they're clean and tight. Doesn't cost you anything and might solve your problem. My truck did the limp mode thing to me once, and loose battery cables was the culprit. I was afraid I was in for a tranny job, so the loose cables was a nice suprise!

I figured it out. I installed a remote start alarm system in my truck. My truck has 3 ignition wires that run from the key down the column. When I install the alarm I only found two and just tapped into those. It was 15 degrees outside so I was in a hurry. You must power up that third ignition wire. It is white. If you don't you will put your trany into limp home mode and do what mine did. Lucky for me there was no damage.
BTW. I do know how to install alarms. A few of my vehicle have been in Car Audio and Car Stereo Review magazine so please no "you should have let a professional do it"

It's not funny all the times I've found something wrong, right after I did something on my truck. To save time I automaticly go back to what I just did if there's any problems.

In the field service world I live in; we always check last maintenance action performed 1st, a missed step, of forgotten hook up 9 out of 10 times is culprit.
