 Regarding High Idle : Is it not good to race a cold engine especially at low temps in our northern locales? When its 10 degrees out, I like the thought of an engine low idling til things get moving...man, that oil is like molasses..thanks for your feedback, bc:D

your oil shouldn't be like ..... : molasses.. : ..... you should be running 5-30, or a light winter oil rated for diesel. the high idle to me is a very nice feature, when its -30 i can start the truck and set the high idle and know it well be toasty warm in the cab when i get in. its worse to let the truck run at a slow idle then at a 1250 rpm idle for a 20 min or so time period.

1200 rpm is not racing the engine IMO.... i start mine let it run till the amps guage come up to normal after all the fuel heaters ETC go off then hit the high idle and let it run for 5-10 minutes if its under 20 degrees outside.

10 degrees is warm. At -30 I would start to worry but only a little if I was using synthetic.

thanx for the input guys, once the engine is broken in, i will consider synthetic oil for the winter. I will also consider installing the high idle circuit, should be handy for warmups and also if stopping for a rest on the road in winter. bc
ps, for my canadian friends, 10 degrees is warm ?? i dont know how you guys do it..30 below.....guess my ancestors did, they camedown from levis county quebec..the last e on my name has an accent egu on it !! bon soire :D

No! It is not good to run the high idle until the engine has warmed a bit.
But a 20 min warmup like the poster above stated is just as bad.
I start mine and let it run for a minute or 2, then I drive to the barn where I might let it run on high idle while I unlock everything. I then go get the news paper,2 miles up the road. By the time I get back it's warmed up enough to get 'into' it. I do this wether it's 2 F or 60 F.
