I had the replacement intermediate shaft installed the week before Christmas. After several hundred miles of traveling plus a few miles on a rough trail to go hunting I have not felt or heard any knocking from steering system. I know the new shaft has given mixed results but for me it is working so far.

i had the same problem on my 2002 HD. The dealer installed some bushings and lubed up the shaft and i've (and my buddy who owns the truck now) had no problems since.

Lubing the shaft was the old solution for the problem. Unfortunately, most of the time it's not permanent and will need to be done again and again. I've had this same issue on 4 GM trucks and SUV's since 1999. I had to have lubing done more than once on 3 out of 4 of those. The new (hopefully permanent) fix is a replacement of the intermediate shaft in the steering column with a new design. If yours is clunking then you can request the replacement under warranty. There is a back order on these right now. I waited about a month for mine.

Replacement of the intermediate steering shaft solved the problem on my 02 Z71. Had old one lubed twice, but still knocked in left turns. A TSB specifically mentions replacement of the shaft.

Just came from my stealer....Ordered new shaft..said about 6 to 8 week backorder.......Its not just 3/4 or one tons.....its ALL trucks. He also said the cars are doing it too. Alot worse than the trucks.Hopefully it will solve the problem....An annoying one at that..........

Hi Guys, I have an 03 LB7, and have noticed a rattle/clunk in the steering. I just noticed on this board that it is a common problem. I will speak to my dealer. They don;t do a lot of work on PU's here (I have to take it to a midduty dealer just to find someone who knows what a diesel is). Is there soemthing I should say to get them to take this seriously?

Is it in any way dangerous - about to take one of my kids for a long drive to florida, and don;pt particular want to do this if my steering is about to die.

I had the same problem too with my 2004 2500 HD. The dealer I took it to in San Diego in December knew immediately what it was and had the replacement installed in a couple of hours. I've put about 1,500 miles on it since and it hasn't clunked or rattled once.

My service guy mentioned something about many of the units not being lubed at all when they were originally installed.

Called the dealer about getting mine replaced as well an he expects them around the end of January. He said they have ordered about 50 and are still waiting for them.

Same problem here! I have a clunk in the steering shaft also, thought it was just my truck. What steps are necessary to have the dealer fix this, and are they fully covered under warranty?

With 15,000 miles on the clock I pulled mine and used the GM grease kit. there was no (read less than a teaspoon) grease to speak of in the shaft. I followed the instructions in the kit and shaft is now quiet as new. If the replacement shafts which I read look just like the original are greased the same way as the original the problem will come back.

Again the General saved a few pennys of grease at production only to loose dollars of customer satisfaction after delivery!
