Hi all, I'm lookin at buying an '82 chevy 1/2 2wd diesel with the 700r4 and 3.42:1 gears. What kind of mpg can I expect out of this setup? I hoping for 25 at least. Do these older engines give much trouble other than glow plugs? I dont plan on pullin much of anything with it so it will be primarily driven like a car. Any info appreciated. Thanx, Casey

depends what size tires are on it. new they got hi 20's for mileage, older motors are gonna be in the low 20's and less. don't expect lots of power or drive it hard and their fairly reliable

I know there not much for power, thats why they get good mileage. stock tires will be on this truck. I'm hopin I dont have to do much to this truck when I get it.

where are you located?

when I drive in western colorado i get low to mid 20's. In the mountins I'm hanging out in the teens.

Most common problems are, glow issues, fuel delivery (lift pump and filters), and air leaks in the fuel lines.

I love my 6.2's. my wife doesn't understand why I'm driving 25 year old cars, i just get a kick out of driving them. I drive like a granny, but i never get cut off. I guess people know i'll just drive through them :)

I live in Iowa. Its a little hilly here and some flat too. I currently own a 95 F250 4x4 psd and it gets about 13-15 mpg here. The current owner of the chevy lives in southern Missouri and he hasnt driven it for a year or so. Its pretty hilly and lots of curves in the roads down where he lives. He said last time he drove it got 22 mpg. Not sure how many miles this truck has on it but I'm sure its a lot.

22 isn't unusual for that setup.

My truck originally had the 700R4/3.42 axle combo, but it is a 3/4 ton so it is heavy. It averaged 25 or better with that set up and the old, worn out injection pump. I changed to a manual and the mileage didn't really change. I changed to a better IP and now I'm at about 23-24 average, mixed but mostly highway.

I would expect 20-25 mpg but it really depends on how you drive.
